Outer Wall Acceleration

Hi, when I was printing a model at Makerwold with PLA I had problems with the first print (the couple of layers a little above the initial layer) and read there that turning off the exhaust fan (I’m using an H2D) and turning down the outer wall acceleration from 5000 mm/s to 2500 mm/s might help and it did.

So I’m wondering, is turning down the outer wall acceleration by half a good idea in terms of quality even though it might increase your print times? Are there any other settings that need to be changed accordingly if you decrease the outer wall acceleration by half?

Yes, but it’s not a linear effect. If you drop again by half, the improvements may be insignificant, or you can get worse.

A good example is to compare two default profiles of BL for the H2D, the balanced quality vs the standard 0.16mm layer height:

As you can notice, beside the infill pattern, the “balance quality” profile differs only in the printing speed and acceleration. But not everything is half, e.g. the outer wall acceleration and speed are about 40% and 30% lower, respectively.

But speed and acceleration aren’t the only tweaks.

Thank you. Why does 0.16mm have a balanced quality preset vs 0.20mm a balanced strength preset?
Also are acceleration speeds capped by max volumetric speed the way layer speeds are capped by it?

I cannot be precise, as this is on BL.
It is known that lower layer height tends to lead to better aesthetics, and I guess it’s also related to their test prints.
And for strength, it may be a sweet spot between the z-direction strength and layer adhesion. But these are solely guesses.z

In any case, you can just create your own custom profile. E.g. Start with 0.16mm Balance Quality print preset, and change the layer height to 0.2mm, and save it as e.g. “0.20mm Balanced Quality @BBL H2D”.

Yes. Despite the values in the printing process preset, the filament limits are respected. Example, with a 0.16mm standard printing preset, and two cubes printed that differ solely in the filament:
