So I’ve been using the Biqu Panda Touch for a few months now and I’ve realized that for my use, it’s probably not a requirement, especially since I set up everything on my computer. Couple that with the fact that their goofy adhesive mount is constantly failing, I’m ready to move on without it (too many companies (especially Biqu) seem to LOVE this method of attaching their products to other products, but IMO it’s just a cheap way of doing things).
So what’s the general consensus on firmware updates at the moment, both for the P1S AND the AMS unit? I’ve never updated either on up to this point, simply because I didn’t want to lose the functionality of the Touch (no longer an issue for me), and because of some of the horror stories that I’ve heard from people whose upgrades kind of went sideways.
So… worth the upgrade… or am I better off staying where I’m at (P1S is at 1.06.30.01, and AMS is at a low version that I can’t currently see because I’m in the middle of a 7-hour print).
If you’re not using the Panda Touch, then keeping the printer at the current firmware version isn’t really necessary. I’d update it. Note that 1.07 lets you update firmware offline, from an SD card, not just WiFi.
Personal opinion, not facts. I could post the changelog now, but there’s an easier approach:
Are you having problems with the printer at the moment? Are you missing any features? If the answer is yes, you should consider updating.
Is your setup working perfectly? Do you want to keep your old settings? Then don’t update. Never change a running system - only if necessary.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m all for updates, but there’s no need to rush if everything is working fine. Keep in mind: You may, but don’t necessarily have to, recalibrate the printer and adjust the filament settings.
In my opinion, not based on facts, I wouldn’t update in this case. Maybe you’ll want to use the Panda Touch at some point in the future, again. You don’t have to decide right away. You could also ask yourself:
What do you expect from the update? Do you want something to work better, or is there something missing?
There is no benefit to updating firmware if your printer currently satisfies your needs.
You only need to update if you need firmware support for an AMS 2 Pro/AMS HT or some newer build plates or filaments.
You seem to be aware that updating will invoke Bambu’s authorization scheme, which would be a deal killer for me, because I am unwilling to give up direct printer control from OrcaSlicer.
