P1S is rooted since updates

I do all the firmware updates, although I feel reluctant to do so when everything is working just fine… I do all the Bambu Lab updates too.

Now I find my settings for PETG don’t work.

Every time it starts, it doesn’t clean properly, and even if I clean it manually by pausing it and operating the x y z manually, removing the molten mess with pliers, it comes back most times, before I eventually get lucky:

Here’s a breakdown of events:

Here we see the nozzle is clean:

Here we see the first track is laid down, but filament is stuck to the nozzle:

It then can’t print because the stuck mess tears up the print.

Here’s another fail, same file:

This never used to happen with these tuned settings:
Layer height 0.2mm, nozzle 255 degC, bed 70 degC

I had to pause the print and clean the nozzle manually.
Started it again and it did the same thing.
Pause the print and clean the nozzle manually.
Then finally it prints okay:


So once that initial line print and cleaning is done, there’s no more stuff-ups.
This makes me think it’s firmware related - not the filament and not the settings.

The Bambu lab printer used to work every time. Now the initial stages are broken and it constantly oozes filament --ruining every start. I restarted it 3 times before finding this inconvenient work around.

What do I do?
This printer may be a few years old but I only print functional stuff occasionally -I’m not printing posters of all the pokemon characters or anything…

My initial thought is a bed adhesion issue. Have you cleaned the built plate lately? With cold weather I have to wear gloves when messing with the printer because I have to use hand lotion to keep my hands from cracking.

I agree - I started having a lot of issues with print failure due to bed adhesion when it got colder (printer is in my garage). I pushed the initial layer temperature by 10 degrees C and things are printing fine again. You might want to try something similar.

If you have an exhaust fan just shut it off if the room is cold (meant lesser than 20°c)

Just a minor point. When someone says an electronic device is “rooted”, many interpret that through computer security glasses as compromised by 3rd party hackers/criminals.

It probably means something else where you live but just for reference. Saying a printer is rooted will get you lots of eyes but they won’t necessarily be interested the issue you are referring to.

I’ve been having the exact same issues on my P1S lately and it’s been driving me crazy!
I have tightened the belts, cleaned the rods, lubricated the axis, replaced the nozzle, cleaned the plate with warm water and dish soap, tried different plates, cleaned with IPA, I tried different PLA filament (Sunlu, Bambu, Overture), dried them in the dryer, tried using AMS and no-AMS. All to no avail. Every print I try on it comes with a messed-up initial layer, and the rest goes downhill from there.

It’s only a couple months old, so no real wear and tear on the parts. I suspect it has to be a recent firmware update. :frowning:

I was talking to an Austrailian friend once and they used the term root in a sentence and I had to ask her what it meant because the context wasn’t clear to me. She sputtered around a little bit and finally just had to say it plain. Think of the word Ralphie got in trouble for using in the movie A Christmas Story when he dropped the lug nuts during the tire change. I was thinking the same thing (security) with the OP title and your comment gave me a different insight in to what was possibly being said.

sounds like my exact issue

I wash my plates but don’t use scalding water. Cool plate, textured PEI, etc. I just use warm water and dish soap.

On textured PEI I’ve been using Bambu liquid glue. I had a plate I thought was dead since things had started to have issues staying stuck down but I tried it with the glue and it’s back to being my main plate and very difficult prints stay stuck down fine and the glue cleans right up with water.

Some hate glue but it really has worked well for me. Just bought 4 more bottles of the stuff.

I recently had the same issue, non sticking on bed and plastic all around on hot end. The silicon sock was tear and the hot end was bent, I replaced that and everything is now working like new. I have a P1S, I hope this can help someone with the same problem.

Generally I think it doesn’t need glue. When they are new stuff sticks well. And things stick well for a while. But after a while some things may not stick so well. A lot depends on the part being printed too.

I’m just saying my own textured PEI plate worked great for some time but then things started not sticking so well. That’s when I tried the glue and it worked great getting things to stay stuck down.

It’s just a tool in the belt. If things stick down that’s great. When it starts losing adhesion you can just throw it away and get a new one if you don’t want to use glue. Totally up to you.

yeah that makes sense… then why am i having same issues with the smooth PEI plate that is way newer and has less prints on it ?
and requires glue anyway

I can’t help you there. And I’m not telling people to use glue. I only bring it up as an option that has worked for me with complex prints and on textured PEI.

I use glue stick on the cool plate but don’t think I’ve even printed on my smooth PEI plate yet. No personal experience to draw from and can’t vouch either way.

If you’re having sticking issues on multiple plates that tends to indicate there may be another cause that’s messing with the filament sticking to the plate or plate and glue.

Things that I’ve seen or others have mentioned are too high moisture content in filament, maybe too big a gap between nozzle and plate, maybe a firmware update somehow affecting things. Maybe some procedural thing with plate cleaning that is affecting both/multiple plates?

Yes I cleaned the build plate with alcohol.

Could be the same issue, but you seemed to suggest the upper layers weren’t working either. Once I get past the first layer, everything is fine.

Lol. Yes that’s true, I should be less ambiguous. By “rooted”, I meant no longer working… no hacking except that the firmware was changed and now it oozes filament before printing the starting stripe, messing up the brims or skirts and draging everything around, messing everything up.

The workaround is:

  1. Use 5 skirt loops in BambuLab
  2. Print the skirt and let it fail
  3. Pause
  4. Lower platform
  5. Clean nozzle and mess on build plate by hand
  6. Unpause and let it print properly

I’ve never had PETG, any variation any manufacturer, stick to the bed at 70, not when ambient is cold or hot, and I secretly think this is why people use glue for PLA and PETG.
The Bambu presets are really good, but they’re not perfect, bump bed by 10 degrees and if that doesn’t work bump nozzle by 10 as well, if that doesnt work slow 1st layer to 40/60, and if that doesn’t work tell me so I know if I’m wrong

the strange thing is , well with my issues
same print settings, 1 print will fail, then all i do is clean off the ■■■■
restart the print and it works
no changes to speeds, temps or anything
