For Xmas my son and I got a P1S with an AMS. We have had what seems to be normal new user ups and downs learning about keeping the print plate clean and the need for dry filament (basic PLA). I got a filament dryer, and we generally use a fiberless cloth for removing prints without touching the plate. I also clean the plate once or twice a week with isopropyl alcohol. It is now usual for us to run the machine most of the day, starting prints in the morning, clearing them off in the evening after work/school and starting another run during the night.
The Problem:
A couple of days ago, the feeder for the AMS started acting up. It would keep pulling filament down, then reeling it back out, getting randomly stuck in the connecting tubes between the AMS and the printer. For a while we could gently help the filament move to the end of the tubes to the extruder, and printing would work.
Our last print failed, it printed a couple of mm of the base, then spent the rest of the day “going through the motions” of printing without actually making anything (a dragon).
Trouble Shooting:
Signs of course point to a problem with the filament motor in the AMS. We removed the AMS and took a look, but I could not see any problems. We did not take the motor apart.
We tried just loading a spool onto the back of the printer and printing without the AMS. We push the filament to the extruder, but the P1S never “sees” the filament.
It sounds a bit like an extruder problem but I am not saying that the AMS is in the clear either. Given that it won’t recognize the direct spool, I would disassemble the tool head. I would remove the nozzle, disconnect the PTFE tube, and disassemble the extruder.
You can find various instruction guides on YouTube or Bambu has its own guide here: Replacing the Extruder unit | Bambu Lab Wiki . I used both the first time I disassembled the extruder.
I don’t know if you need to replace the extruder or if this is a sensor problem or a jam or something else. That is where I would start and it may take a replacement extruder unit or something else. If you haven’t been a heavy user I would be surprised if you need to replace the unit, but these do wear out. Disassembling will probably give you a better idea of what the issue is.
Again, the AMS is possibly having issues too, its always good to disassemble the tubes and clear out any debris in the system (both for the AMS and the printer).
I would also do the easy It trick that everyone laughs at, but works. Pull the plug for 1 minute. Complete power off, plug back in a test in hopes it clears whatever error may be stuck in memory. I assume you already did this. Then yeah, wilberown seems to be bang on. Go from least difficult to most. GL. I’m gonna have to learn to take the thing apart one day too I’m sure.
GL. Bit of a heartbreaker with the kid. The idea is to make it so robust that the kid and even wife feels confident that they send things to print on their own without the fear of breaking something. Talk to support too. Just be prepared for some wait time before they get back to you. I know this from experience and got frustrated with the delayed response. Then they responded a day later and it’s Chinese new year right now… So expect a bit of a wait and some back and forth, but they do seem to care which is half the battle sometimes. GL
Well, my son is 20 so it is a learning experience. We have had a solid 2 months of printing and have printed hundreds of miniatures and accessories for our D&D campaign. We have been printing way faster than we can paint much less use them. Our project is to print the full Monster Manual 5e and we are about 25% through it.
Sounds awesome. My kids 22. He was excited, but since there was small hiccup (clog) he hasn’t printed anything else. Support has been good and it’s a warranty thing. Guess these things happen. But I want to get him printing again asap. It makes me happier when he is printing rather than me printing. You know how parenting is. All the best buddy! Hope you get it up and running pronto!
Hey there i am.having the exact same issue so checking to see what ended up working. I think I’ve done all except replace the extruder unit. Mine happened after a small clog. Ive done the following:
Push clog out with unclog pick
Disassembled enter extruder and clear filament off clear sensor and gears
Replaced ptfe tube and cut to the required lengths
Factory reset
Nothing has worked ao far and currently have a support ticket to see what they say.
