P1S Now failing all prints - Need help!

All of a sudden, after 18 months excellent printing, my stock P1S now fails every print (see pics). It looks like an extrusion issue or clog, but I can’t find the problem - Any suggestions what I can troubleshoot to resolve this problem?

What happens - Prime strip or first layer sometimes come out patchy OR most of the model prints, but misses a layer / stops extruding entirely.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far - am all out of ideas:

  • Several different filaments, brand-new PLA+

  • Tried external spool and different ams slots

  • Replaced hot end with new one

  • Recalibrated the printer

  • Checked underneath - Z belt checked, cleaned and pulley lubricated

  • Cleand, disassembled and inspected extruder assembly

  • Tested all 4 fans are working

  • Checked belts

  • Replaced & Formatted SD Card

  • Added grease to z axis and lubricated rods

  • Cleaned plate

  • Attempted printing with door open & glass top removed

  • Factory reset

  • Uninstalled Bambu Studio and rolled back to earlier version of software (without updates)

  • Tried printing different models

You may want to try a factory reset on the printer. It has worked for others with odd issues like this.

Replaced extruder?

No, but I did entirely dismantle and inspect it - Couldn’t see any visible issues, wear or PLA fragments.

I’d replace the extruder assy and even potentially the extruder motor, but those are spares I have sitting here.

Any chance you changed what is was sitting on, like to shag carpet or squishy foam (don’t do either!)?

Otherwise maybe flip it over, grab the z belt and drive it up and down a bit and make sure it is smooth.

Just completed a factory reset and calibration - Sadly the prints still fail

I’ll have to look at ordering some spares - Nothing changed when the faults started. it’s been great for over a year until this week.

Since you tried all the mechanical avenues, have your tried reformatting your SD Card? This would not be the first time that a few bad sectors on an SD Card was causing the printer to exhibit behavior like this especially if it were happening all of a sudden. At any rate, it takes two minutes to format your card using the P1’s menu and it will at least eliminate that as a possible cause.

Did you flip it on it’s side and try moving the z belt? Also examine tensioners and pulleys and motor shaft. (turn it off 1st)

Extruder or ptfe in my opinion. If you try a model with no retractions it would be interesting. Vase mode a small something.

Hi @FandangoFlip,

I experienced exactly the same yesterday. You use Bambu Studio, right? Did it install BBL preset updates before this happend?

In my case, the update from 2.4.0.7 to 2.4.0.8 broke something. If you don’t remember if you accepted the update, check the debug log (search for “2.4.0.8” or “[BBL Updater]” in there).

I uninstalled Bambu Studio, re-downloaded last version and after installing, I declined the preset update. Prints are finally working fine again.

I uninstalled and rolled back to 2.3 - Didn’t fix the issue

Have you tried Bambu support?
Try Orca Slicer or something else?

Yes - I’m waiting for the support team to reply.

No I’ve not used Orca as it seems to be a hardware fault

Only takes a minute to unstall orca and test?

Have you maybe tightened a screw on the x,y, or z axis

I just got a P1S so these are just things that I think might work
