P1S ran out of filament but didn't know

I started a 5 hour print before bed. It printed 90% (4 color print on the first 5 layers so the heavy lifting was done). It ran out of filament but didn’t know it and printed air until completetion.

I tore down the extruder, removed the filament sensor, made sure the lever wasn’t jammed. The extruder dot was still lit in Bambu Studio.

Put everything back together. Closed and opened Bambu Studio and the sensor was cleared.

Not happy. The whole thing was a software issue.
Anyone else seen this and is there a fix?

I am going to ask a really silly question and I apologise for this. Did you cycle the power BEFORE you took the extruder apart? Because, generally, that will clear a software problem with the sensor system.

Nope, no fix for you. But take my answer as grain of salt.

Recently, got air-printing at 25 hour of a 31 hour print. Only caught that after 3 hours or air-printing. It was my fault to blame, since I reduced the tension of the extruder gear to print TPU but forgot to tighten it back for PETG print.

It’s quite easy to detect if the filament is not moving with the AMS buffer.

The ams buffer has a sensor that triggers when it reaches end of travel path. It tells the AMS to start pushing filament to increase that buffering length of filament. Which length is about 20 to 30 mm of filament.

So, you don’t see that signal every 30 mm of filament travel, then it pretty sure is nozzle clog or extruder clog.

And that happened with X1C if my memory serves me correctly. X1C does tell you if you have a clog and pauses the print. But of course P1S does nothing and consequently air printing.

Not sure if this is why P1S is cheaper than X1C or it is just enshitification. Or maybe it becomes dumb and dumber because of old age, just like me.

Have to ask… which printer was this that you adjusted the extruder gear? Can I do this on my A1 mini or only my p2s? I print a lot of tpu… and would love to try the supersoftstuff.

P1S, I cut a hole on the plastic shell to get to the tension screw.

Wow I did not know you could do that. How do you know how far to turn it back and fourth for the correct tension for materials?

The tension screw is intended to be tightened until the screw head touches the extruder housing. Some users have reported that soft TPU filaments feed better with the screw backed out. The only TPU I’ve tried is 95A, and no adjustment has been necessary.

Yep, I only need to adjust this for siraya tech TPU 85A and possibly 90A, some no-name flex filament I bought a few years ago from ebay.

No need to reduce tension for TPU 95A

@user_1922849493 , just 1.5 turns or equal to 0.75 mm. It could vary from one printer to another as the tension spring may not be 100% the same.
