I’m having an issue with the first layer on the P2S. I’m a keychain manufacturer, and this printer was supposed to improve my production workflow — unfortunately, the only truly reliable printer I still have is the A1.
The problem is visible lines on the first layer that “shine” when viewed from different angles. I’m printing with a 0.2 mm nozzle. I’ve attached comparison photos of the first layer printed on the A1 and on the P2S.
On the P2S, there’s also a clear difference between the outer lines and the infill, while the first layer on the A1 is perfectly smooth and uniform.
The issue occurs mainly on the Carbon Plate, but it is also visible on the Textured PEI Plate, just slightly less pronounced.
I’ve already tried many different settings and methods, including:
bed / first layer temperature from 55°C to 70°C
nozzle temperature from 205°C to 240°C
first layer flow ratio 0.9 – 1.25
cleaning the build plate
swapping build plates
enabling/disabling first layer cooling
Z-offset adjustments
first layer height changes
first layer speed changes
first layer line width changes
filament calibration
full printer calibration
…and probably a few other things I’ve already forgotten. Unfortunately, nothing comes close to the result I get on the A1.
Additionally, parts printed on the A1 stick to the build plate extremely well, while adhesion on the P2S is noticeably worse. Printing a chamber fan cover helped a bit, but didn’t solve the surface issue.
If anyone has experienced a similar problem and found a solution, I’d really appreciate your advice.
As far as I can see on your picture, you are not using the same setting in the P2S than the A1 do you? (It seems you have several perimeters on the P2S but none or only one on the A1 for exemple)
I had acceptable results on my P2S with the carbon plate so far. Have a look at the special carbon effect print profile on my model here, and tell us how it goes? (We can go further and tweak the temperatures)
Hi, your model is designed for a 0.4 mm nozzle, so this effect may be less visible. However, looking through the replies to the model, I found one photo where another user’s carbon effect looks just as weak (see the attached image).
As for your first question - I tried to recreate the settings from the A1 (which works almost on a stock profile, except for ironing) on the P2S, but the result is still not satisfactory. I have the impression that this is a slicer issue in P2S, because it’s hard to believe that a printer that is technologically much more advanced than the A1 would produce such a poor effect.
Sorry, I did not see you have issues with the 0.2 nozzle specifically.
I do not know what settings the other users have, in my case the picture from the model have been made with the proposed print profile, Black PETG if I remember well, and a 0.4 nozzle that’s right.
I see there is no information about that from me - filament i use here is SUNLU PLA+ 2.0, but it happens on every filament. Also, same filament on A1 works perfect
I’ve just received a new P2S, and it’s first layers compered to my other 7 printers are not very good, the rest of the print is fine though, but bad first layers.
OK, so as proposed I made a test on my P2S with a 0.2 nozzle and my carbon effect plate (from Aliexpress, that was probably the lowest priced when I bought it for my previous P1S).
I have enclosed the print profile I used if you want to test on your side, I just made a primitive cube and used the same setting I use with the 0.4 nozzle and my carbon plate (except the speed which is a bit lower of course). Filament used is Bambu Basic PLA black, the nozzle is form Bambu too.
Yeah Hilbert Curve is the best solution for this so far, but still - A1 with monotonic lines works perfect, but P2S not and that is the problem… However, thank you for your active involvement in trying to solve the problem!!
One thing I realised about the P2S is that after switching plates, doing a full re-levelling via the Calibration menu works better than the pre-print calibration. Not sure if that would help.
You mentioned you have adjusted the z-offset. What did you set this to?
Also have you tried orcaslicer perhaps just to rule out a slicer issue?
I performed full calibration many times after switching (and also without switching) build plates.
I tried Z-offset values from +0.04 to -0.02.
I haven’t tried OrcaSlicer yet, but I’ll test it today or tomorrow.
I assume you configured the z offset through the machine start gcode and this corresponds to the build plate you’re using?
Just to be clear, your issue is that you have the appearance of lines on the first layer when the texture/ carbon fibre pattern is supposed to conceal it?
For me, my issue is especially when printing on a smooth plate, sometimes the z offset ends up a little too high and so when I tilt it at an angle I get an inconsistent sheen. Lowering the z offset seemed to help for me though.
Download the developer nightly version which should support P2S.
Also you might want to try if printing from Bambu Handy. This would rule out a firmware issue and you know for sure it’s more a slicer issue given the gcode generated would be different.
If you still have issue with the first layer, no matter the bed level calibration you do, and with nicely calibrated filaments : I would have a look at the eddy current sensor, there is a page on the Wiki to help adjust it (very quick, just 2 screws to undo/redo).
This is a tip I received from the support and that had a tremendous result on my P2S.
I think I may have found the solution to the problem of bad adhesion. It seems that the factory Z-offset setting on the P2S is absurdly too high. For the P2S it’s set to 0.01, while for almost every other printer it’s around -0.04.
During my tests, this value initially seemed far too low to be usable - but apparently not. The print now adheres to the build plate very well. However, the issue with the shiny silver lines has not completely disappeared, although using Hilbert curves for the bottom surface significantly reduces the effect (at the cost of longer print times).
