Painted areas disappear after using Cut tool

Hi all,

I’ve run into a frustrating issue in Bambu Studio (v2.2.1.60) that I hope others have experienced or found a workaround for.

What happens:

  • I import a 3D model into Bambu Studio.
  • I use the Paint tool to color certain areas of the model.
  • I then need to cut/split the model because it’s too large for my build plate.

Problem:
As soon as I perform the cut, all the painted areas completely disappear.

Attempts & notes:

  • Brush-Paint is clearly treated as an overlay, not as actual object color.
  • Per-object color or modifier-based color seems to survive cuts, but brush-painted areas do not.
  • The issue happens consistently with 3MF files that contain painted areas.
  • I’ve tried downgrading to version 1.7.7.89 (suggested on the Bambu forum) but the problem persists.

Questions:

  1. Is there any reliable way to preserve brush-painted areas when cutting a model?
  2. Are there other slicers (or older versions of those slicers), or workflows that correctly translate 3MF painted areas, so they don’t get lost after cutting?
  3. Are there other tools that can generate/convert 3MF’s that do not loose Painted areas after cutting? (As an intermediate step between Painting in Studio and Cutting in Studio, maybe by translating painted areas to objects)
  4. Are there other tools that can cut 3MF’s without losing Painted areas after cutting?

Thanks in advance for any insights or workarounds!

I have this same problem. I’m surprized that I can’t easily find a solution or there is not a solution to this problem. I have spent a few hours trying but no luck so far.

You’re right.
I can imagine, painting parts get ‘broken’ when the main object gets cut.
But it makes a lot of sense to have the Bambu Studio software developers, change this.

In terms of optimized process workflow, it doesn’t make sense to paint after cutting. Especially since painted areas overlap multiple cut tiles, and making them align from tile to tile is not easy at all.

I hope the Bambu Studio development team, will address this in an update.
