Perfect run outs?

This morning I woke to something that has happened twice now on fairly large prints. I ran out of filament, but the print finished.

There is absolutely nothing left in the AMS, and yet the print completed. There were no signs in the waste bin indicating that the printer just melted the remainder. There is no filament in the PTFE tubes either. There was no second spool waiting to swap in with the same color.

I know it is theoretically possible, but twice now? I’m not running a farm here, just a hobbyist doing prints for my self.

Can anyone shed any light on how this is happening?

Plus the PTFE tube has about 10 grams of filament in it, that’s a good little buffer.

Its by design.

If the filament can’t be retracted when the print finishes and there’s no torque on the AMS motor, the printer knows that the filament end must be in the PTFE. It then just purges the remaining filament down the poop chute.
