Hi all. I’m considering buying some Bambu PETG-CF, but before I do. I want to know, will it wear out my nozzle, and what exactly happens when nozzles wear out? Does the hole get bigger making it ?
Also, is it compatible with the AMS (1) I have? (I have an X1C)
The X1C comes with hardened steel nozzle 0.4 mm, which is the recommended nozzle type for PETG-CF. It will still wear out the nozzle, but it will take a lot of CF filament to make a difference, and I mean a lot! this filament is compatible with the AMS.
Also, I wanted to add that PETG-CF is not a super easy filament to print with, in my experience, it needs to be super dry and while I have printed with a 0.4mm hotend, it’s a lot more forgiving with a hardened 0.6mm hotend. It has never clumped on me, but I see clumping issues being reported frequently around here.
Interesting. I had read so much about how difficult it was to work with that I was pleasantly surprised when it just … worked. Ditto TPU. Dry it well, print on a freshly cleaned build plate, boom, no problem. Maybe I need to print more or larger/longer prints to run into trouble, but so far, so good!
Your mileage may vary but don’t be scared to give it a go.
Thank you for this info. How does the nozzle wear out? what physically happens to the nozzle? become too wide in the melting section? increases the size of the nozzle hole? Anybody?
A few kg of cf filament will not make a difference. Standard nozzles wear out faster, but they still wear out. You are talking about 800 hours for cf and 1000 for non cf.
You will start to see inconsistent extrusion on your prints. Blobs like to form. Clogs become more common.
These photos are of brass nozzles, which wear out much faster than the steel ones in your Bambu printer. Same principle though.
The nozzle tip is slowly flattened due to the friction of abrasives in the filament as the tip is dragged across the previously laid layers. Though to a lesser degree, the diameter of the hole increases too, but usually not as fast as the tip wears. Here’s a deep dive on it:
