Need help identifying what settings I may need to adjust to correct this issue that you see in the picture below.
I’m using black PETG HF and it has been dried for 12 hours at 60°C. I always dry my PETG before using it.
I would also like to add that I’ve checked the color scheme map and when looking at speed time and flow and temperature and everything is consistent. Perhaps the default profile might need adjustments? Do I need to run hotter? Do I need to adjust other settings that have to do with the filament, etc.
The funny thing is is that I’ve printed this model numerous times without issue. I have recalibrated the system, lubricated and inspected all the necessary parts. I even changed the .40 nozzle just to rule that out. I have even tried this on another X1C and I’m not getting the exact perfect results like I once was so it’s leading me to believe that there’s something in the settings that change that I’m not recognizing or perhaps the filament Needs to be dried even more, which just seems odd to me. It’s just one thing about this printer I can’t stand is the level of inconsistency when you’ve done something numerous times and then all of a sudden you haven’t changed anything and it starts to fail or not act as it had once before.
Thank you for the response. So the model adhered perfectly and when cool popped off nicely I have used the texture sheet with glue so that hasn’t been an issue. I’m suspect about the moisture as well but it’s been pretty dry here and my defecate levels are optimal so you can imagine my confusion About this.
I don’t have tons of experience with PETG HF but what I do have has shown issues if it picks up too much water. Even if humidity is moderately low, filament can still pick up water - it just may do it slowly. But can’t tell you for sure that’s water.
This just came off my printer last night. White PETG HF but it pulls the hygrometers I use in storage down to the minimum they can display - 10%. It’s a patch for a friend’s ice maker and printed fine. At least on my printer, no surface issues. Fairly large piece and demanding to print since fairly tall and narrow. Printed it on edge on smooth PEI with glue stick. Still needs a little cleanup from the brim on the left edge. Only surface defect is near middle hole along upper edge where I had to swap out an empty spool.
Edit - photographed at a different angle, I did indeed have defects. The first 2/3 of the print was near perfect. The last 1/3 wasn’t quite as nice because the filament had to be used before it had completed my drying procedure. In the thread about bamboozled by PETG HF.
I generally load it up and do a test, nozzle temp 250, extrude some filament manually verify its coming straight out and not curling then snip it off quick with tweezers. Now does the filament continue to creep out of the nozzle? It should not. if it does it suggest some moisture being boiled off.
I found that with the black PETG-HF it wanted to ball on the nozzle so I went to 260C nozzle temp to resolve that.
Also, just wanted to echo what @MZip said, I didn’t notice it but he noticed the corner of the model does not meet the build plate. If that slowly curled up throughout the duration of the print then I could see it causing the surface defects. You have the door of the printer closed?
Thank you - in regards to the pic - that is not a build plate pic - that is just another printed model underneath that it was resting on when I took the pic. The model was attached to the plate. At the moment I just had 2 of my other X1Cs start making a noise in the z-axis after upgrading the firmware (red herring??) - so I am dealing with that at the moment. Thanks for all your information.
Based on my experience with PETG HF, certain colors seem to be more challenging than others. On my Carbon Fiber Plate (without any glue), I had to increase the bed temperature to 80°C and the nozzle temperature to 260°C to achieve a consistent first layer without defects. I suspect that even textured PEI surfaces may require adjustments beyond the stock profile.
I have had success with a number of different setting changes to the filament profile and model. but also using another roll of black PETG HF filament AND a different X1c printer - so I’m entering this information for logging purposes.
Ultimately, I am drying the previously roll that gave me poor results for 12 hours And I will come back and update once I have completed testing on the other printer that gave me poor results……and then we will know for sure if it was just the model settings and the filament profile.
In short - I added snug supports, increased other layers to 260c. Made fan speed consistent 40% and slows down the initial layer and outer wall speeds to half of what they were.
UPDATE: - Changing the settings as described below and making sure the nozzle is super clean - is the solution.

I’m having similar issues with PETG-HF grey. I was able to isolate it to the actual roll. I dry the others @12 hours and tested between my P1S/A1 same exact settings, etc. I have several others that work fine. I have increased nozzle temp and a few other changes and they are perfect. I submitted a ticket to get a replacement for the 1 roll.
It’s funny that you mentioned that about the dry time
I’ve been sticking with the 60 to 65°C for 12 hours but then occasionally you’ll see some people say they dry it twice or almost 24 hours.
My moisture readings in my AMS are nominal and I’ve had a roll of PETG sitting in there for about a week now since I last used it.
I’m going to be printing a new enclosure tomorrow with the same settings I mentioned above.
I’ll report back if I noticed any differences.
The other thing I did notice, PETG is super sticky And occasionally there were blobs up on the nozzle.
It’s so dark in that damn X1c compartment it’s hard to see sometimes - now I shine a light in there on the nozzle and make sure the nozzle super clean so it doesn’t leave any deposits.
I’m in a really good routine of 8/10/12 depending on the roll. I bought a Ninja Air Fryer for $59 Walmart online. I keep it in the garage and place desiccant on the bottom below the grate and use the dehydrate feature. I will place in a plastic gallon bag straight out of bambulab box and I’m getting 35%-40%. When I remove from the Air Fryer it’s been a consistent 10% when I place in the gallon bag. Then when inside my AMS units it stays @ 10% as well. Ohhh I live in Las Vegas, NV I think it’s rained here twice since October(so you see out climate it really nice). I tried the Sunlu for $49 and the display screen was crappy and the lcd flexed. It’s crazy why Filament Manufacturers haven’t partnered with Ninja. But then if it was “specifically” for filament the price would be $149+…lol. Good luck with PETG-HF I stumbled on a random YT guy and copied his settings and no more problems. I will say that the plate adhesion has been 7/10 hit/miss. I’ve been scrubbing my PEI plates and will use the glue stick on longer projects as I can’t trust it. Just got the super tack so I’ll try those this week.
Ohhh I just found the YT Guy settings that. I used. I’m still knew with less than 45 days experience…But I used his settings and the worked GREAT on my P1S/AMS unit as well as my A1 straight off the roll with no cover(while I printed)…I’m no expert but these settings seemed to get me on a good path.
I feel your pain on the lack of lighting.
That’s my next project to get a better light.

Hello, sorry to resurrect this old thread, but did you fix the old roll of PETG HF by drying it for the additional 12 hours? Currently experiencing blobs that either deposit onto the top layer or get embedded into the walls. I am thinking either damp filament or incorrect flow.
