PETG single layer shrinkage mid-print

Anyone know what’s causing my print to do this weird mid-print layer shrinking with PETG-HF on my H2D? It seems to happen when the new layer starts printing less material than the previous layers. All the layers after that seem to go back to normal

Ex: I printed 2 tubes on the same plate. The taller tube (pictured) has a flange. The first shrunken layer happened when the printer finished the flange. The wrinkle higher was when it finished printing the shorter tube

Not really possible (for me at least) to understand what you’re complaining about.

And the picture is too blurry to see any detail.

Post a better picture. Use a paint program to draw a line, or circle, where the problem area is to be found.

You could also post a screen grab of the model on the build plate from Studio, which will probably help with understanding what you’re printing.

The blue arrow is the first layer issue. You can see the layer issue right above the blue dotted line. This happened the layer after the outer flange on the part finished

The red arrow is the second print issue. You can see that one right above the red dotted line. This happened on the layer after a second print on the same print bed finished

Is the issue the blue is highlighting the very first layer, or that ridge that’s a few layers further up?

If the ridge, that’s a “water line” problem that all 3D printers have. The print is shrinking continuously as it cools. If the time from on layer to the next is fairly consistent, that shrinkage is consistent and you don’t see it. But if there’s a transition from a region where the layer time was long, to a region where it’s short, you can see a small discontinuity caused by the greater amount of shrinkage.

You can minimize the effect by maxing out chamber temp and running the extruder temp as low as possible. But the only way to truly eliminate it is to model a small gap between outer walls an internal fill, which isn’t always very practical.

As for the red arrow, what’s on the outside there?

It’s just a solid tube the rest of the way up. The mark above the red like is where the other print finished, so it’s probably also a waterline. Sounds like I’ll need to plan for it if I need a super smooth wall
