PLA Silk+ Rough overhang faces

Greetings All,

I’m having an issue with inconsistent edge/face quality on surfaces that have a slight overhang/obtuse to the center geometry of the part.

-All parts are Bambu PLA Silk+ (Red/Blue/Green). I started on red and switched to the other colours after.

-Same print settings (mostly stock, speed on outer walls down to 100 and adaptive layer height on). Because the red turned I left the other colour prints the same.

-Filaments were purchased at the same time and dryed in the same cycle of my ams2 pro.

My question is what did I get away with the red print and/or what should I trial to improve those surfaces? Thanks -JD

The blue D20 has an effect called “ghosting” on the 13 face. Almost looks like “echos” of the 3, That’s not a filament parameter. It’s to do with vibrations that are set up in the print head.

It’s possible different colours reflect the light differently and it’s present but less visible on the red one.

There are various calibrations the printer offers, and you could try changing the orientation of the object in case it’s caused by VFA (the size of the teeth in the belt mean that at certain angles the print head doesn’t move as smoothly).

Silk filament by being reflective showcase all minor imperfections, something you should be aware of. Like @Eponymous say vibrations in the printer or loose nozzle can cause those deformation but what i suspect its the adaptative layer height its making the layers thinner wich cause issues like the texture shown in the blue side 11. Change layer height to standard. You will not benefit from the adaptative layer height

Thank you for this. I will also test the removal of the adaptive layer height after I mess with the vibration. I’m planning on messing with something to do with acceleration and drop the outer wall speed even more. On my normal PLA prints, the adaptive layer height has helped with the tops and I didn’t consider it. Hind sight the silk is changing a lot of my ideas I had.

Print speed down to 50, and acceleration down to 2000 max. My H2S barely wobbles which is weird :smiley: . That combined with the adaptive layer height off, makes the obtuse angles on the bottom way better.

I first tried it out on the blue and thought maybe I can sneak the adaptive layer back on slightly with my green print. It did make the acute top angle layers nice, but diminished quality on the bottom.

My takeaway,

PLA silk isn’t as fun as it is nice to look at. I might mess around with different layer heights and even slower speeds. And it’s a bit deceiving, as the prime tower comes out flawless with no visual issues at all, no matter what settings I have. I have also noticed the green doesn’t come out as nice as the blue, which might suggest some slight viscosity tweaking. But both vibration reduction and turning off the adaptive layer height has proved the best so far for my obtuse angle geometry. I’ll continue to try to tweak it here and t here, but thank you both. It was starting to look like I was making a friendship bracelets with all the half test prints.

Now they look OK, if I know gamers, they will ask about the orientation and infill and whether it rolls fairly because of it :slight_smile: I would print a mould and cast the dice, it’s the only way to keep them happy!

@Eponymous Luckily my intent is to not roll :slight_smile: , but hold dice. My current setup is a large tray with different dice and those old school glass beads. I’m going to make a few of these instead to clear the center of the table. This is the red one with hidden magnets I printed without changing settings, that didn’t end up too bad at all. Fun to learn some CAD and design.
