Polymaker ASA Profiles

I was happy to see there were pre loaded profiles for Polymaker ASA, so I used one without really reviewing the settings, since the Bambu filament profiles always seem to be pretty close, and got particularly bad layer adhesion.

Thinking it might need to be hotter and slower, I checked the speeds and they are at 200-300mm/s…Polymaker recommends 30-50mm/s!

I am not sure if Bambu or Polymaker made the supplied profiles, but what reason would there be to have the speed almost 10x what polymaker recommends?

The speeds shown in the process presets are not changed by changing the filament preset. Actual printing speeds will be limited by the Max Volumetric Speed set in the filament profile. For Polymaker ASA, the included preset is 13 mm³/s, limiting actual maximum speed to 100mm/s with a 0.4 nozzle. That is not an extreme speed. Actual testing of my ASA filaments have yielded values between of between 18 and 25 mm³/s.

ASA seems to like heat. I warm the chamber by preheating the bed at 90°C for at least fifteen minutes before starting an ASA print.

I understand how the speeds are limited by flow, but I’m not sure why you get different values than I do, my Polymaker ASA profile is also at 13 mm³/s and when I slice any layer height for a 0.4 nozzle, even the 0.28 layer height (max speed limiting from flow limit), it’s still running 150mm/s. On 0.2 standard its running closer to 200mm/s and on the 0.16 I was working with it was close to 250mm/s.

I also have a heated chamber which stays at 60C during printing…once I slowed down the speeds to the Polymaker recommended 50mm/s the layer adhesion improved substantially.

In order to get 50mm/s speed limited by the 13mm³/s flow rate I have to select a 0.6 or 0.8 nozzle, so it seems weird that they would set a flow rate which will exceed their speed recommendations even with the standard 0.4 nozzle at all layer heights.
