Pool surface on the top

Hello together,

Im back again with a question regarding quality:

Yesterday i printer first time a bigger part (a plate with 4 holes in the edges and a text in the middle of the plate).

I reconized that the top surface has a poor surface quality.

Can someone explain what are the reason(s) could be?

There are several possibilities:

  • What type of filament and have you dried it? Fresh out of the package does not mean it is dry.
  • It looks like the part may be lifting from the build plate. When was the last time you cleaned the plate with soap and water?
  • What infill type and % are you using?

  • I used pla matte white from bambulab and it was tried before (10% humidity).

  • Plate was cleaned before print, because on the first try of the print the part was wrapped ( i think it was to close to the aux fan)

  • Gyroid infill, 15%

At what temp and for how long did you dry it? Matte PLA is more susceptible to moisture uptake than PLA Basic.

Bed adhesion is one factor in warping, but not actually the root cause. Dry filament, a warmish, draft free print environment (while avoiding heat creep, 30-35°C is good for PLA), lowering print speed and/or reducing layer height all directly address the root cause.

the temperature for drying was 55° (the given temperature on the filament page).
Printing speed is decreased to inner and outer wall 60mm/s

Did you dry it for the recommended 12h? I usually get away with 6, but sometimes…

Next is bed adhesion. Because the surface defects are typical for warping. As the edges lift from warping, upper layers are thinner than expected, leading to these typical overextrusion ripples.
A number of good and thorough scrubs with warm water, dishwashing liquid and a microfibre cloth (smooth plates) or stiff clean brush (textured plates) work wonders.
For the smooth plate, you may also want to apply a few lines of glue stick, take a wet paper towel and then use it to spread out the glue lines as a thin film across the plate.
Then, consider using mouse ears (or a brim) during slicing.

Finally, but quite importantly, avoid drafts and print in a warmish environment. For an enclosed printer, 30-35°C is great for PLA (caution: expect heat creep above 35°C :skull: ). For an A-Series … what is your max feel good room temp?

There’s more (5°C increase in 1st layer (only!) temps, slow, lower layer height), but PLA does not usually need further tweaks.
