Poor bed adhesion - first layer too high?

Hi.

I have a P1S, that I’ve had for a few months now. I’m not new to FDM printing, but new to Bambu.

Steadily, over the time I’ve had it, I seem to have had poor bed adhesion of some kind with increasing regularity - whether that’s whole prints coming loose, or warping and curling at the extremities.

I mainly print with Bambu PLA, but have also been trying PETG-HF lately. This is on the Bambu PEI smooth plate, textured plate, and now the Supertack plate.

I’ve tried cleaning the plates with washing up liquid (what I assume is what Americas call “dish soap”?) and isopropyl alcohol. If anything this made things worse.

The latest print I’ve tried, I knew was going to be a challenge. It has a fairly small initial footprint. I’m using a brand new roll of PETG-HF, dried at 65degC on a brand new Supertack plate. All stock Bambu settings. I added a brim to give it a fighting chance of adhesion. However, when putting down the first layer, this is what I see…

Now, to me, there appears to be a definite gap between the walls of the object and the brim. This pretty much renders the brim useless, right?
My instinct is that the first layer isn’t getting “squished” enough - as in the bed is too far from the nozzle on the first layer. What do you think? This would potentially explain why things aren’t adhering well.

Or perhaps it’s something else? Underextrusion? Worn nozzle? (although it has only had a handful of PLA prints through it, and one of PLA wood)

I’d be interested in how someone with more expertise than me would tackle this. Calibration? As I say, I’m running everything with out-of-the-box settings, which worked great initially.

Just in case it’s not clear, here’s the part of the picture anotated.

I’ve just read on another thread that someone has had the exact same problem, and it was due to a clogged nozzle.

Thinking about it, it could have started happening after I used the PLA wood, which did clog. Perhaps there’s some left in there. I’ll go and have a go at cleaning it (cold pull?) and see if it makes any difference.

For your brim issue - you can adjust brim-object distance in the slicer settings. It defaults between 0.1 - 0.12, so whatever your number is, bump it down a little so that they are joined.

Do you see the z being too high on the underside of your first layer? That will look like rows of loose cylinders of plastic, not a squished flat surface. Bambu lab software does adjustments to your z offset based off the type of plate you tell it you are using, so be sure to use the correct one that’s on the machine. (+/- 0.02)

Well, doing a cold pull to clean the nozzle has helped somewhat. I’ve at least got a successful print.

I’ll try tweaking the object to brim gap and see if I can improve things further. I’m a little up against it with regards to warping, as the room my printer is in is only about 10degC.

The jury is still out with regards to the Supertack plate. For me, it doesn’t seem to be as good as a smooth PEI. But there are plenty of other threads discussing this.

I spoke too soon. After a (mostly) successful print, I tried another one with slightly tweaked brim to object gap.

It didn’t even begin to stick to the Supertack plate. It also seemed to be hugely underextruding.

So I thought I would try a flow dynamics calibration.
