Poor print quality only using AMS on P1S

Hello, For 6 months it printed well. The print quality is poor but only when I use the AMS. I had the original AMS that came with my P1S and it had poor print, it’s fine if I use the external filament. I purchase the AMS 2 pro and had the same issue, I replaced all the PTFE tubes from both AMS to the printer, I also replaced the filament buffer twice. I’ve checked to make sure my software is current. see the pictures for the quality of prints.
Any help would be great.

Using AMS

External but same spool as before print.

This model looks like it printed upside down (from the photo depiction), yet no obvious signs of support material being used.

Can you share a screenshot from the Bambu Studio Preview tab, from under the build plate and show the “Line Type” view?

I still cannot see any support material.

If I am correct, this is the reason and not the printer or AMS.

You should see when I use multiple colors, not good. That print was with a brand new AMS 2 pro that I bought last week.
The original AMS print was no better for the few weeks before. I did have months of great prints when I first bought my P1S with AMS

Have you made sure there are no kinks in the PTFE tube, that the PTFE tube has a clear path with decent curves to travel through?

Have you moved the spool to a different slot, purely for testing reasons.

If this truly is an AMS issue, rather than external spool, and two different AMS units of different types, it can’t be an AMS issue (as two AMS units are not going to have the same mechanical problem), it must be a placement issue.

If the AMS is up against a wall, it may affect the travel of the filament through the PTFE tube.

The logic I am working on is there is something making it difficult for the filament to get from the AMS to the printer.

If after checking these things and it still persists, share a photo of the printer and AMS together.

Have you tried without the additional coupler you have on the inlet and go straight into the inlet?

That’s quite the feed loop. You might want to shorten that ptfe from the AMS to the buffer, and Malc is correct, bail on the extra coupler.

I think you should invest in the 4way splitter or print one. That’s a wild setup.

Thank you for the help, I shortened the PTFE tube coming out of the AMS and removed the extra tubing piece that is connecting to the back of the printer.

Print using external printer.
Same Bambu labs PLA, both dried in Polymaker.

It’s got to have to do with this, that I’ve replaced Roth two new ones.

to make an apples to apples comparison, use the same filament for both through the AMS and without the AMS. That will help eliminate some potential issues and help troubleshoot better.

So to sum up you’ve replaced the following:

AMS1 [failing] with AMS2 [failing]
PTFE [failing]
Buffer 1[failing]
Buffer 2[failing]
Dry,clean,spools,etc[failing]

Nothing obvious to me, but part of that almost looks like it’s heat/cool is way out of whack, but enabling AMS doesn’t really effect that.

Silly question but you’re not positionally covering up the machines vents/fans/doors/glasstop differerently between AMS and nonAMS?

Can you double check the pressure advance values saved for these filament profiles? Triple check for a misplaced decimal?

Once the filament is loaded and the print running, it makes little difference between using an AMS unit or an external spool holder. The difference being that within the AMS is a closed environment. If it is printing just fine as an external spool but not when inside the AMS unit, then the most likely suspect is the interior environment of the AMS unit. Is it possible that the environment within your AMS unit has a rather high RH, possibly with the presence of desiccant that has become saturated? Or, has the interior been contaminated with household cleaners?

Thanks 3dEd, I would agree with you on that also, my concern is that my old AMS was causing the poor prints , but I bought a brand new AMS 2Pro and I got the same poor results with it. The external spool filament was good.

Non AMS

You replaced the PTFE tubes from the AMS to the printer, but have you changed the internal PTFE tubes in the AMS? If so are they the correct length? Too long internally and they’ll bunch, cause drag.

There’s clearly a feed issue. I’m wondering if it’s either caused by worn internal PTFE, or if the internal hub gear is worn or motor giving out.
It’s really too early for the gear or motor to give. If this happens in every slot than that’s probably the culprit. I would think BL would replace either.

It will take opening the AMS up, then carefully removing the hub assembly (the motor will come out with it) then check for wear or a build up of plastic on the extruder like gear. You’ll have to remove a cover, and be very careful.

Thanks for the post, I’m not very tech on 3d printing. I did the flow rate on my machine using the AMS 2 but the prints look exactly the same, none look better or worse than the other.


I thought that was weird.
I did another calibration that I did notice a different and inputted the setting that looked the best.

And I updated the value. I’m going to do a print and see how it looks with the new values.

I’ve updated the values as best as I could with the test prints. Since I did that it is working correctly with the AMS 2 Pro. I’m leaving it as it’s finally working.
