.3mf is not exclusive to Bambu as far as I know. Sadly people also upload those on printables with no .stl as an option.
But I get your point that it is an helpful file format for own projects or in companies. But for a 3d model sharing platform it seems a bit usless with all the different printer out there and bambu studio really could make it possible to ignore this settings.
Yes, they could, and should. As well as prohibit uploads without the raw model.
I think Bambu’s idea of creating multiple, printer-specific files, is doomed. There are just too many variables involved.
We will not reach their goal of click-and-print models until there are industry-wide standards for software and hardware that would allow a standard file format. Having different profiles for every possible printer/nozzle/filament combo is just unmanageable.
Imagine the difficulties creating and exchanging a paper documents if you had to specify the speed of the print head, the duration of the inkjet spray, how many jets to open for light gray text vs black, etc. Oh, you want to use the laser printer instead? Sorry, you’ll have to change all those settings…
We need the 3D print equivalent of a PDF, but we are a very long way from that nirvana.
I think it should be mandatory to include the raw files.
No uploads should be allowed without the raw files.
If you open up a 3mf file you don’t get the prompt.
If you create a new empty project and then add the 3mf file you don’t get the prompt.
If you create a new project, then add anything to it - such as a dummy cube object, then add the 3mf file you do get the prompt.
Exactly, you have to have a model already open for the proment. Apologies for not mentioning that. I’ve always got a window open with something in it already. Rarely do have have a blank project open.

This would help so much, I really hope they just implement the prompt whether you want just the geometry or the entire project every time you open a 3mf file
There should be an option in preferences for:
- 3MF opening default behavior:
- Open whole project (default, as it is today)
- Only import geometry
- Always ask
This would resolve all our pain points and let us avoid addin dummy primitives just to be able to import an object. I’ve got an A1 Mini like a week ago and I’m already tired of getting all my settings and even printer and/or plate and/or nozzle changed at will.
Just now I didn’t notice the project changed to the Smooth Cold Plate and got a failed print after 2 hours and wasted ~100grs of filament.
This shouldn’t be the expected default behavior at all.
Of course, the other option would be for MakerWorld to allow downloading geometry files only instead of full fledged 3mf project files. We ain’t a mass producing printing farm with standarized machines, we’re end consumers lmao.
It will always prompt if you drag the file into Bambu Studio UI.
No, it won’t. The only way for that to happen is to have another model already in the current project/plate.
If you open from scratch/zero it will override absolutely all your settings.

I don’t often drag a .3mf into the slicer, but I think it is treated the same as closing the current project (which generates the prompt) and then opening a New project. The prompt is asking if you want to discard the current settings or save them to a profile before closing the project, not if you want to transfer the current settings to the new project.
I’ve only seen the transfer option when changing a profile for an already loaded project…
The whole point in using a Studio/Makerworld .3mf is to have ALL the settings for a successful print. If you only want geometry, download the .stl or .step file. Or download the .3mf and be prepared to review all the settings.
If you click on the small „cube with +“ symbol in the slicer prepare tab you can add the .3mf file and it will ask if you want load geometry only.
Indeed. The problem I have isn’t so much speeds and layers - it’s the machine model and that type of stuff which drives me nuts.
I like the suggestion above - add something to the plate, then “add”. Gonna try that tonight!
Just started posting a new thread on this an saw this pop up in the right window. Yes, an issue for me too. When I download a 3MF file from Makerworld the default behavior is to open it as a new project with new (different) printer model, build plate, AMS settings.
Is there still not a way to resolve this? Or do I just need to download files manually and import geometry to an existing project?
How about import all the project settings EXCEPT the AMS settings and printer model (map settings where it can)? Could this not be added to Bambu Studio?
This is fine for newbies, but for everyone else who likes to have control over their settings, there should be an option to select whatever settings you want.
Not to mention that a 3mf file will forcefully change your printer model, your filaments, every setting, even this isn’t noob friendly.
So, no, it shouldn’t force you to whatever settings the 3mf file creator used.
On top of that, no, you don’t get to download STLs anymore in sites like MakerWorld where they push and push for 3mf files instead, some models don’t have the STLs available.
A Makerworld .3MF contains the model and settings that produced a successful print, for someone, with their printer, with their filament. They are saying, “This is what I made, this is how I did it, with this tool, and this material.”
If you are not prepared to review the settings, you should print from Handy, where (limited) adjustments will be made by the Bambu servers. A MW .3MF is not intended to provide a load-and-print experience.
If the default behavior when loading the .3MF did not use the modified settings, so that your default settings stayed the same, you would only be loading the geometry and would never see the settings.
The whole purpose in loading a MW .3MF into a slicer is to see the successful settings and have complete control over the settings, which you do have. You can change anything you want. It is your choice if you do or do not use that control.
In most cases, you only need to load the .3MF and then select the correct printer. This is no more effort than specifying the printer before you download it.
You are then shown a comparison between your printer settings and those modified by the creators. Look it over, choose to use those modified settings or discard them in favor of your usual defaults. If you discard their modifications, you are left with only the geometry and filaments (which will always need review). If you load the modifications, the differences are highlighted (by * and color), so you have still another opportunity to see the modifications and reset them individually. If you used “Open in Studio” instead of a simple download and the base printer profile matches your default, you can still see and change the highlighted modifications.
So you do have “an option to select whatever settings you want.” Maybe it is not where you are looking for it, but you do have recognize it and make the effort to use it. It starts with choosing the printer in the slicer.
I do think that MW raises unfounded expectations and confusion by their presentation of Print Profiles on the model page. Since these are used only by Handy prints, with no effect on downloaded models, there should be a clear distinction between them and downloads for a slicer. Perhaps they could be tagged in a way that they are visible only in Handy? At least label them as Handy Print Profiles…

There are still complaints because many folks like to leverage the ease of use of finding models in Bambu Studio and hit the “Download and Open” button. I probably print 90% of what I’m printing through this workflow. Every time I do this I have to change the printer back to my type (P1S), then change the nozzle size (if it’s not 0.4mm), and then resync my AMS to ensure the right filaments are displayed. If there was a permanent preference to disable importing the printer type, nozzle info, and filament info from 3MF files, I’d use it and never look back. Are any of these things difficult to do? Absolutely not! Are they steps anyone wants to do every time they print a file from Maker World? Also no.
If you do not want to edit the 3MF, don’t load the file into an editing program.
If you just want to print the 3MF, use the phone app.
