Prime Tower or Purge Tower?

Hello people!

My friend and I are having a friendly argument about whether it’s called a “prime tower” or a “purge tower”. He says it’s called a “purge tower” because many other people call it that, but I just want to show him what the community thinks. My stance is that it is called a “prime tower” because:

  1. The nozzle is primed :rofl: lol
  2. The tower is not only printed in multicolor prints (smooth timelapse also suggests a prime tower)
  3. The printer shouldn’t be purging a noticeable amount into the tower

What do you guys think?

It’s a Prime Tower….though it’s having a dual effect: priming and… purging. :wink:

But… It’s not purging, right? It should be purging in the poops! If you’re purging in the tower, your purge volumes might be too close for comfort.

It’s priming the nozzle and also purging the remaining filament before switching to the new one.

I’m still convinced it should be doing all the purging in the poops. (This isn’t meant to be strongly argumentative, just my two cents.)

I agree. I think that at least the poops can be recycled to make filament or melted in silicone molds to make coasters (for example).

The purge tower must be crushed first, and not many of us have that tool, or the space to have it.

You can set it up to purge in the tower as well as within the print itself, though for the latter you need to consider a few conditions before doing so.

It is a Prime Tower.

If it was a Purge Tower then the 3D printer company Stratasy who filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Bambu Lab in August 2024 may have a case.

The Accused Patents: Stratasys alleges that Bambu Lab infringed on patents related to heated build platforms, purge towers, and networked 3D printing.

“PRIME” is when there is no filament(clean) in the head or nozzle and you “PURGE” when changing to different or same filament in a used head or nozzle. That’s what we have used forever, but that’s in the corporate.
