I like to print some prints using the “by object” setting, to reduce surface imperfections due to cooling while its printing the “other” part of the layer.
If you are trying to print a two-material print, one on each nozzle, there will be no purge after a nozzle switch. Depending on what materials you’re using, this can cause a number of problems, from blobbing and feed issues, to pure adhesion issues. I’ve had a number of prints that used support material on one nozzle fail because the lack of purge left big blobs.
The solution for now is just to move the “objects” to different print plates and just trigger them manually, but it’s a bandaid solution
Would be nice to have a print by object that includes flushing the waste into a purge object. Right now its just by layer to flush into a purge object which helps a little but still hard to minimize waste without adding to the print.
What is the use case for this? It sounds like a great feature I just can’t understand the reasons why it’s good in my head is it so you don’t have to keep emptying a bin of waste? Or can you actually use the purged item for something
Instead of ColorX → Color Y → Color Z → Support material.
This feature would be especially useful for H2D users. Each filament full swap using the AMS would cost 70+ seconds while the prime tower+nozzle swap is much faster than that. A 5cm model is 250 layers, You can seriously save an hour or two just from that.
It is a bit of both, but the main goal is efficiency. Currently, even when you use the ‘flush into object’ feature, the printer still creates a lot of ‘poop’ because that secondary object is forced to stay at the same layer height as your main print. If a color swap requires a large flush but your purge object is small, the extra filament still goes down the chute; conversely, on layers with no color swaps, the printer wastes filament just to keep the purge object’s walls growing.
With my idea, you could add a ‘purge reservoir’ like a heavy-duty bracket or a tool organizer and the printer would only add filament to it when a flush is actually required. This would allow you to finish a print with almost zero waste in the bin because all that purged filament would be converted into a functional, mystery-colored part for free. It’s better for the environment and saves you from having to empty a waste bin during long multi-color prints.
My problem with my HD2 is a well examined but undiagnosed layer shift specifically in the y-axis by at least one tooth of the belt. No obstructions nothing hitting makes no sense. My workaround has been to print a very low layered object and let that print first to go through the color change cycle in the docking Bay where that is where the issue seems to be getting the shift. Doing this procedure seems to have both heads both heads available or printing without having to go to the docking Bay and purge the colors I’m using. I had a Chinese dragon that I printed with the method above without a purge tower and I had horrible finishes on the two different colors, weak areas and what appeared to be under extrusion because I had no way of purging the old filament and have the printhead prepared to print properly. I really wish this could be something to be figured out not so much for my Band-Aid fix but for better surface finishes in general. Two 19 and 1/2 hour prints Not 100% one being the finishes on the material the other being the single layer shift at the base.
Now for the other Band-Aid: using my really good soldering gun and mold the shift that looks like a cloud for a base and hide the mistake made by the machine.
