Print failures with 0.2mm nozzle on P2S

Has anyone experienced issues when printing with a 0.2mm nozzle? I was printing a multicolor model using ASA filament, and even during the first layer, I received several warnings such as:

-Extruder is not extruding normally
-The extrusion motor is overloaded

The same model printed multiple times with a 0.4mm nozzle came out perfectly without any issues. I’ve noticed that other users on the H2D thread are reporting similar problems:

I am sharing picture of my clogged nozzle—it shows that two colors are somehow stuck at the top entry of the hotend. I’m trying to figure out whether the issue is related to the filament type (perhaps PLA causes fewer problems), multicolor printing (with filament swapping while the chamber stays warm, potentially affecting filament behavior), or a combination of both.
Please share your experiences. Thanks!

Are you saying you’re using ASA + PLA thru a single nozzle multimaterial, as well as using a 0.2mm nozzle?

The normal advice for multimaterial is to max your purge for the best hope, but that’s gonna take… lets say… a long time… to get thru a 0.2mm nozzle. Put on your patience pants!

I would also maybe edit your PLA material that youve chosen, and give it a higher max temperature range (not printing temp. “Recommended nozzle temp max”), to help it just “be hotter” when its trying to push the ASA/PLA mix out.

No, definitely not. All the colors used were ASA only. I haven’t printed any PLA with the 0.2mm nozzle. That was just a thought - whether PLA might potentially cause fewer issues. Maybe other users can confirm if PLA works reasonably well with the 0.2mm nozzle.

The 0.2mm works great with unfilled PLA and PETG even in a multimaterial print. Haven’t tried anything else with the 0.2 though.

Is it BL ASA or some third party filament? If so: do they recommend 0.2 nozzles?

That’s a good point! I didn’t know that ASA might not be recommended for a 0.2mm nozzle. I actually used “The Filament ASA” from Spectrum. There are no recommendations or restrictions about the nozzle diameter listed. But if the Bambu ASA is not recommended, that must have a reason. I guess that other ASA filament brands are likely to be problematic as well.

I’ve been printing with Bambu Lab’s ASA using a 0.2 mm nozzle and haven’t run into any major issues so far. I haven’t tried any multicolor ASA prints yet.

The only recurring problem has been occasionally forgetting to enable both the inner and outer brims. I’ve also spent some time fine-tuning the filament and print settings to achieve the best possible results with minimal visible VFA lines.

I haven’t been able to complete a successful print using the 0.2 nozzle and standard Bambu PLA. At random interval it keeps throwing the extuder overload error. No problems whatsoever using the 0.4 nozzle. Kind of frustrating, seeing as my A1-mini never had a single failed print.

I’m wondering if it’s due to the latest firmware and that people who aren’t experiencing the problem are still on the initial version.

My misunderstanding. I dunno what more to add other than the p2s extruder and the a1m extruder are two very different mechanisms, maybe there is indeed a trouble with 0.2mm nozzle and the servo motor. Plain asa (no fibers) should not present a problem imo

Throwing my hat in here too. Had the P2S for less than 24 hours. I make a lot of 0.2 prints with what I make and it really feels like the newer systems with the hot swap hot ends makes it pretty difficult to print consistently at 0.2.

I’m working on a print now, and have jacked the PETG temp up to 265 to see if keeping it hotter will help.

However, looking at the live view, it looks like it’s so smooshed up against the bed.

I’ve had similar issues with my H2D. I can’t get 0.2 to run through that without extrusion errors nonstop.

That’s strange, I choose to upgrade from the P1S to the P2S mainly for the easy swap of nozzle as I change them a lot. And I used the 0.2 nozzle quite a few time already, with PLA and ASA at least.
The results were very good with all those materials. I just had some adhesion issues that has been solved with drying the ASA spool (it is a bit old and the cardboard spool has probably stored some moisture, even if all my filaments are on vacuum bags).
The nozzle swap is very good for me, easy and very quick, and I like the magnet at the back which allows me store the nozzles on their Ikea Skadis metallic shelf!
I just have to test some ironing with the 0,2 to see how it goes

Update to the original post:
Later on, I found that the same filament type caused clogging even with the 0.4 mm nozzle, when printing for a little longer time a single color print. So I have strong doubts that the issue might be caused by poor-quality filament.
After this discovery, I purchased Prusament ASA and completed several prints (20hrs in total) using the 0.4 mm nozzle without a single issue. I haven’t tested it with the 0.2 mm nozzle yet.
However, I believe I can now consider this issue irrelevant, as it was caused by problematic filament — specifically “The Filament ASA” from Spectrum.

It’s not an ASA thing for me. It’s the 0.2 nozzle.

I’ve been through 2 H2Ds and 12 different 0.2 nozzles. Same cycle every time. Extruder overload warnings, not extruding normally, then it eventually clogs. Swapping parts and redoing settings doesn’t change it.

The proof for me is consistency. The exact same print is flawless with a 0.4. Same filament, same settings, same environment. And the same file printed with a 0.2 on an A1 or X1C runs fine with no issues. P2S and H2D with a 0.2 is where it falls apart.

Also some of these 0.2 nozzles clog in a way you can’t even clear properly with the needle. That should not be normal. It feels like bad 0.2 nozzle batches or a manufacturing tolerance problem.

I’ve been printing with Basic Bambu PLA for 3 months now on a P2S. Never had any issues. Until about 1-2 weeks ago, EVERY print with a 0.2mm nozzle ends up in heat creep. The filament expands right where the black heat sink meets the stainless steel nozzle. I’ve tried printing with the door and lid open, lowering the temperature, increasing the temperature, and calibrating the filament. Nothing works and everything has the same result.

Was there an update to Bambu’s software within the last month that’s causing a sudden change? I’ve purchased two new 0.2mm nozzles and both have the same results.
