Print head banging front of printer when attempting filament cut

I am experiencing issues with my X1 Carbon printer, which is on its 4th day of operation. The problems began after a power outage of about an hour and a half. Initially, the rear purge line printed a right angle, but now it makes a loud noise when turning, prints a jagged slope, and appears to go out of sync because it prints a double line in the rear. Additionally, after a color change, the printer slams into the front when attempting to cut the filament, knocking off the print head cover. After replacing the cover and resuming, the print finishes but is very unaligned. I am printing a stock file directly from the printer, so the issue is not related to Bambu Studio.

I have taken several troubleshooting steps:

  • Performed a factory reset and recalibrated the printer, but the issue persists.

  • Replaced the 0.4mm hot end, but the problem continues.

  • Powered down the printer for 15 minutes before restarting, with no improvement.

  • Cleaned the rods and adjusted the belt tension.

  • Inspected the filament cutter, but found no faults.

Despite these efforts, the printer continues to malfunction in the same way. I suspect the problems are related to the power outage, but I cannot identify the exact cause. Any guidance or suggestions to resolve these issues would be greatly appreciated. I opened a support ticket and currently waiting for a response from bambu as well. Here is an image. Keep in mind that I had to resume after the print head banged the front wall and losing the cover while attempting to cut the filament.

I am using PLA Basic with an AMS. I’m also on the latest firmware.

Are you able to manually move the head to all corners without any interference? Do you have any mods that you have added to the printer? The printer is loosing steps for some reason.

Thanks for replying. There are no mods. I can move the head to all corners. I checked this yesterday when I cleaned the carbon rods.

My only thought would be a faulty mc board. Would that be a possibility? Could that have messed up due to the power outage?

It’s possible. The angle in the corner would tell me that one of the steppers is shutting down. I would hope that support can verify this via the log file.

Thank you. I hope so. I submitted a log with my ticket yesterday.

I suspect the power problem may have fried some electronics, but it would not hurt to try restoring to factory settings.

  1. Go to the printer’s menu
  2. Select Settings (hex icon)
  3. Select General
  4. Select Restore Factory Settings

I think he mentioned that in the OP.

Oops, missed that. Only saw 15 minute power down.

Is there an error or hms code ?

There is no error except the error I get when the head cover gets knocked off.

I`ll assume firmware after the reset ? and studio are up to date ? (studio 1.9.3.50)

@Neiljt Yes that is correct

How does the printer home when you click the button? Is it also aggressive or is it just a slight bang at each front corner? A slight bang is ok, but a heavy slam or continued bumping might indicate something specific.

But note, it uses sensor-less homing, meaning it needs to bang around to know where its at.

@just4memike I’m guessing it homes during the calibration process? And if that’s the case, it does do a slight bump on the two front corners. Nothing major.

Yes, it will home during the first set of moves. That’s what we want to confirm. If the board is doing something odd, its likely the homing will be odd as well. If the homing is fine, its probably not the board (but can’t 100% rule it out yet).

If its only an issue at the filament cutter (and of course in printing after skipping steps), maybe there is something on the frame’s peg for the cutter. Maybe the belt tension is so off, the belt skips on the two homing hits. This would make the printer think the head is somewhere its not. Possibly positioning the head’s cover over the frame’s cutter peg and simply pushing the cover off when it tries to cut the filament.

Well I feel like an idiot. There was a small piece of black purge tower in the rear corner that I completely missed. I changed the print head, cleaned the carbon rods, retensioned the belts, and I missed it every time. Thank goodness it was simple although my dignity is shot.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help me with this.
