Printing delicate parts and need of support or not

Hello everyone!

For anyone who takes the time to read and respond I want to thank you. I have around 350 hours printing and I have a p2s. For the most part everything has been great, however I haven’t had the best luck when it comes to parts that are more on the thin side and are larger.

Currently Im just printing a filament holder and it has these hexagon shapes in the side. towards the bottom everything looked great, but the further and further up it goes the worse it gets of course. My suspicion on what happened (ive seen it do this before) the taller it gets the more leverage it has on it, and when printing it will wiggle and be uneven and eventually when the tool head comes back over it will hit it and break it. I didn’t see it break the pieces off but i suspect that is the case as its just pla.

So I just wanted to get your ideas. Bambu studio with stock settings didn’t recommend or put supports on it even with it turned on. should it have supports?

Also in general, if you have any must change settings from .2 to to whatever for example, please I would love to hear what improvements you have made to settings in bambu studio. Especially support settings. I would love to improve the support settings. Ive had a few times where the support starts on the build plate and then when it gets to the right height the part will then start to be printed on top of the support. What happened was it didn’t stick well and did the wobble stuff and got knocked off. I think it might of been petg. That or pla. I’m inclined to say petg because it doesn’t seem to stick as well in some scenarios.

Anyway, Thank you for any feedback you can provide.

Hello, The photo was taken with the part on its side. but yes i was curious about the angles because bambu studio didn’t recommend supports. I did reprint it, basically when it got to the hexagon shapes, i slowed the machine to 50%. It finished the print. I was watching it and it definitely makes the vertical pieces wobble and at faster speeds started to leave the edges warped up and would of eventually lead to the nozzle hitting it. at 50% it was slow enough to flex it just a little but not enough to where it became very uneven.

You’ve already solved the problem, but you can always keep this in mind:

  • Hexagons are the Bestagons. :+1:

Why? Because they don’t need support. Especially with the pattern shown, you save a tremendous amount of material while maintaining the same level of stability.

Honestly I don’t blame you. This was a little sketchy to print XD. if it was any thinner id feel like supports would be mandatory just to keep things from moving around. I will definitely keep your feedback in mind. thank you for your input.

stability was definitely on the edge with this one being pretty thin. the angles seemed to print great, it was more the thin sections moving side to side while the toolhead was above it. It would be kind of cool assuming there isn’t one, but a variable speed for different layers. i know i can adjust like the overhang speeds, but when it does the infill it goes back to a really fast speed which would wreck the print in this case which is why i just slowed everything down to 50%. drastically increased print time, but it yielded results so thats great. if there are other speed settings you know of i could adjust, id love to try them out. everything is default in bambu studio for me right now so im game for anything.

It is possible - they’re called modifier cubes. They’re used to adjust the print settings in specific areas. For example, one cube at the bottom for fast printing, one in the middle for normal printing, and one at the top for slow printing.

These cubes are not printed; they simply adjust the print settings:

  • When printing a model with a high height, you can use the height range modifier to slow down the printing of the upper part of the model, thus preventing it from collapsing during the printing process.

Ah lets go. I am going to have to play with this. Thanks a ton

Why not use the “Slow down by height” option in the Speed tab?

try to lower accelerations, especially the one relative to moves. set it zero/500 it doesn’t hurt
