Printing part with overhangs- support failing

I’m tyring to print a part that fills much of the print bed and has overhangs.
I have been having trouble trying to print with support. The support keeps getting knocked off, causing the me to stop the print.

I tried a couple ways to print- but nothing has worked.
I did wash the plate pretty darn well (I thought) and dried both build and support fillament. This part takes quite some time to print (a couple days) and annoying when it fails after many hours.
I have a very short video of the file so show the problem,

Ideas?

hi! i was having like the same problem with one big model, and after looking close the point of break i was finding out probably the printer is too shaky and speedy to make the final part of the branches of the supports, i dont know if its the same problem but i want to share my configuration in the suports after figuring out a bit, try to put this on the slicer, i think is a profile thing maybe? idk is only increasing the branch diameter a bit to dont be to sliiiiiiiim

No, it’s not the shake, it’s just the tree was generated too thin and it curls upwards with the improved chamber cooling causing more shrinkage.

Solution includes printing slower on suports, disable chamber cooling, strengthen the tree

I will have to look up all those settings.

I was using ‘auto tree’ but perhaps ‘regular’ would be better in this case? When I set it up for that it would take a lot more support material and a lot more time (already a couple days).

That hollow box takes days? I must be missing something!

You may want to find the h2d support thread, and make sure your firmware and software versions are in line with what others

What filament is the print being made from? PETG? Or are there multiple filaments being used at the same time?

I am using PLA filament, and PLA support.
Support is feeding right nozzle from drybox. Colour PLA is from AMS.

Body is all one colour.

When I setup up to print with ‘standard’ support, it was going to take something like 3 days.
With ‘tree’ is was still a day and a half or more.

I tried printing with the face down- but the curves did not print well (rough). So I tried flipping it over with hollow side down, since that side appearance does not matter.
It just barely fits on the build plate, I have to position it just right to allow both nozzles to be used.

Personally, what I would do is go back to normal supports. Tree supports aren’t great for boxy geometries. They can work fine and save filament, but they can also create problems too. I’d go back to a standard support and ditch the trees.

Also make sure your nozzle blocker isn’t bent (just to ensure it not grabbing the structure and causing the fail).

I think I will try a small portion of the part- just print it with ‘standard’ supports and see how it works out.

I did some modifications, printed it with the ‘outside’ up, which means a hollow to fill with support.
I used ‘normal’ support this time.

It looked great for about 22+ hours, then started getting mini-spagetti pieces. Later it was just a mess and I finally cancelled it and gave up.
I’ve wasted a lot of $$ in filament and no luck.

I have some video too, but I think this show it.

IMO: Hang up that second nozzle and just send that with regular-ass grid support with a single filament. Reliable++

If you set 3 interface layers, you are gonna end up with 4 . Check in slice preview. You are getting a support interface transition layer which is probably to be used with dedicated support material, but you can’t turn that off, and I’m pretty sure that’s what is ruing all our supports

Only use the support material for the interface. This is part of why its taking so long. Also, I only use tree support when normal supports cant be used. Like when the supported area has a non supported area directly below it, the tree support can grow around the lower area. Tree supports are always the ones being knocked loose. Ive also found that adding a brim to the part that is big enough to also connect with the support brim, will help stop tree supports from being knocked loose. Basically anchoring the support bottom to the part bottom

If it grows and isn’t uprooted for some vague reason which happens in about 7 out of 10 of my prints using TREE supports then maybe it survives. But more often than not trees just get destroyed. Normal supports aren’t much better: either they shag or the supported layer simply won’t adhere.

I’m not using a dedicated support material; I’m printing supports in the same ABS as the part itself. At this point I’m strongly convinced the issue isn’t my printer but the slicer. Specifically I believe it was designed and coded with the assumption that you’d be using a dedicated support material.

I came to that conclusion after watching how the slicer generates supports especially that uncontrollable and always present “support interface transition layer.” Why would we even need a transition layer if not to “save time and purge leftover pure material” while switching to a dedicated support material?

I’d really like to hear opinions from others about this but no one seems to comment on it as if it’s just something that’s always been there and accepted.

I did not notice an option for support material for the interface only. I will have to look closer.

I cannot win with the PAHT-CT as main filament and ABS as support! So frustrating just wasting hours of my time to research and change settings then to just see the support not sticking to anything and ruining each print. This print requires support within an extrusion type design. Any help would be much appreciated.
