Printing truncated cones 360529

Hello0 Bambu forum,

Crafted a model of four truncated cones as the interior to some lamp shades.

The white interior cones look like this.

When I imported the cones into Bambu and printed them they printed like

Generate support was turned off before slicing in Bambu. Any way to get rid of
the interior matrix?

Because the cone surface is fairly thin, 3.2 mm, it was expected that the cones would print in a couple of hours. As they are printing now the print will take seven hours.

What it’s creating is called “Infill” - the slicer thinks that region is a closed part of your model.

Something about those shapes isn’t properly closed up in CAD. My guess is those have zero volume, just a skin, and the various apps are interpreting it as “oh well just close these missing faces and we have a shape”

Many many ways to approach this:

  1. Stay with your current model and deal with it as a “closed shape”
  • Set your walls to 1 or 2
  • Set tops, bottoms, and infill all to 0
  • It might figure out what you want to do, just by hollowing itself out.
  1. Redo the cad
  • As a common example, the line width of a 3d printer is usually 0.40mm [or around there.] So those shapes you have, really want to have at least 0.80mm of width to them. Consider a mug, the walls of the ceramic mug occupy space, where as it looks like your objects “walls” are just a piece of infinitely thin paper. Those solids are what you need to draw in. It can be as simple as 2 cones, stacked on top of each other with a small Z offset, use one as a cut and one as a body. Then cut the tips off.

Its also great to use the Preview tab of the slicer. It’s going to show you, pretty faithfully, what the machine is about to do, and you can tell if its going to do anything silly before you even have to hit print.

Were these designed to be printed using vase mode (spiralise)?

Such models are provided as solid, no openings and are printed with a single continuous wall from base to top.

It would end up looking like the screenshot.

The part appears to be the lamp shade. It would need a means to connect to the base and/or lamp.

It looks like you’re using fusion surface bodies. If you use the thicken command then you’ll get a solid that you can print.

I thought vase mode too! Either that or do 0% infill
