[Problem and request] Image-to-3D problem with hollow parts

Hello.
First of all, thank you! I’m super happy with my Bambu and with all the thing MakerWorld offers.

I’m creating and printing some statue and bust with Image-to-3D tools.
It usually works fine, even if there is a lack of details in certain parts, like decorations, but the ability to create an model, rendered also in the back, from just an image is amazing.

My problem is that all the obj created are empty inside. This is not a problem, usually, since when the parts is uploaded in the Studio it became filled.
But sometimes, when a piece is not completely merged to another, is not filled.
For example, I’ve created an armor, the helmet is slightly raised from the bust, and it became an hollow parts, much more fragile and slower to print.
The same thing happen if I create an helmet with an eye slit, and since is open the whole helmet became hollow.

So, for the problem, I’m asking that the tool, since is made for 3D print, prevent this problem creating as a solid all the inside part.
For the request, it would be nice having a small panel with some option, like in Relief Sculpture, with sharpening, size, maybe supports.

The best tool for that is Meshmixer from Autodesk, it’s free.

Load your STL, click edit, then click solid and file/export. Make sure you choose the right file format, STL or 3MF.

After it makes the model solid, you’ll have two models. Click the solid one before exporting.

The same tool can be used to repair open manifolds and is a good tool to have as an alternative to the slicer’s repair tool.

Yes, I know MeshMixer, but it’s not a problem that Make solid can solve.
The problem is not that the model have unwanted hollows, the model is designed in a way that is not good for the print.
I’ve asked to change the way the model is created, so the hollow part are not created at all. Or, even better, put on a switch so you can control options.
And, using MeshMixer functions, you loose too much details.

I realize your suggesting that the features I am describing below would be desirable if they were inside the slicer, but why reinvent the wheel when a better tool is available that is precisely for this purpose and is still free. For better or worse, the algorithms used in Meshmixer – the same that are baked into Fusion 360 – haven’t had a free competing program that can do any better.

If you could upload an example of a model you are not happy with, perhaps I can have a look and better understand what you may be running into.

To paraphrase an old saying from Computer Science “Garbage In-Garbage Back”. :wink:

If the input model is flawed, no slicer or other software will improve it if the information is incomplete or damaged. This is especially true for defective or non-manifold meshes. Meshmixer—though not my preferred program for this purpose—offers many options that can output the same surface while leaving the interior solid. Mastering them requires experimentation. Alternatively, Autodesk Fusion 360 provides the same functions with more granular control but comes with a steeper learning curve.

You may be experiencing this degraded level of quality (object on the right), which is the default Meshmixer make-solid setting. Admittedly, it looks horrible, and the edges are degraded. However, the one on the left has crisp edges when the resolution is turned up and one uses face-groups before generation.

And as you can see, when one looks in the slicer mesh view, Meshmixer does an even better job of fixing the mesh than the slicer itself. Here’s what that looks like. Note the overwhelming number of vertices in the model on the right which is the bad default mesh mixer solid output, however, the one on the left which is the higher resolution model has nicer flatter edges. This same principle can be used for organic shapes too.

Here are the settings I used. I first used generate face groups which is similar to that function in Fusion 360. This allows the algorithm to refine how it creates the solid mesh.

Then I crank up the resolution.

It produces a very crisp output. Here’s another view using 3D Viewer.

But no, I’m not suggesting a different feature in the slicer, or in MeshMixer.
As you said, if the input is not good, it’s hard to have a great output.

This is why I would like the Image-to-3D tools could be improved in the functionalities, and resolve this flaw while creating the model, so no post is necessary.
