Problem with printing threads with support

Hi everyone,

i’m a beginner and need some help with printing fine threads. I read some of the older threads and tried to apply some of the suggestions but it didn’t really fix my problem. I’m working on a vase that can be screwed apart. the threads do close, but on the very thin parts of the thread i’m getting fuzzy/rough spots and the result doesn’t look clean.

printer: bambu lab p1s with ams.
material: matte pla. slicer: bambu studio. i used adaptive layer height, and in the slice preview the thread areas go down to 0.08 mm. i printed slowly to favor quality. i also tried supports, but i don’t have much experience with them and i’m not sure if that made things worse at the transition between thread and support.

right now the thread only closes smoothly if i use lubricant like silicone grease. is that normal, or should it usually engage more smoothly without lube?

for context, the outer diameter of the thread is roughly 120 mm and the inner diameter about 110 mm, so it’s not super tiny. i’ve seen smaller screws with much finer threads that were printable, so i’m hoping we can figure out what i’m doing wrong here.

my current guess is that the lower parts of the thread (the lead-in) might just be too thin at this scale, but it could also be an overhang issue combined with the support settings.

any tips on what i should adjust to get cleaner thread flanks would be really appreciated. thanks!




To my eyes, the glaring problem is your support interface is still fused more strongly to the print than it is to itself/the supports.

You can attack this in many ways

Any or many of:

Adjust support top z gap
More support interface layers (try 3)
Zero support interface spacing (densifies it, makes it more likely to all crack off at once. … Or if uncalibrated, break your part off lol)
Lower temperatures
More fan during overhangs
Slower for overhangs
Do a pressure advance calibration for this filament
Go at it with a screwdriver and get all that interface off and see if it behaves significantly different
