Problem with stearing servo (180°)

I’ve finished my first Cyberbrick model (the Official Truck) and so far everything works fine.
However, I’m a bit surprised by the steering:
Shouldn’t the steering servo return to its neutral position when I center the (right) control stick? That’s how it works with all other models that use servos (aircraft, RC cars, etc.).

After making a right turn, for example, I have to actively steer to the left to go straight again (and vice versa). This is very unusual and makes it difficult to control the vehicle properly.

Is there any way to adjust this in the software?
I only have the options “Throttle” or “Steering (Angular)” for this function, and I haven’t found any other settings related to it.

There are two types of servos from Maker’s Supply - they look identical on the outside except for the small sticker with their part number. You may want to check and see which you have installed.

  • PG001: This is the 180˚ servo and should return ‘home’ after you release the controls.
  • PG002: This is the 360˚ servo which will remain in position after releasing the controls.

The first is an “Angle” servo, the output arm position is always proportional to the PWM input. This type is actively controlled in order to maintain position as commanded by the input signal. If you push on the arm, it will fight you to prevent its being moved regardless of its position.

The second is a “rate” servo, the output arm rotates continually at a speed and in a direction that is proportional to the input signal. It stops moving when the PWM returns to center (typically 1500µS). But unlike an “angle” type servo, this type doesn’t hold position after it stops moving. Push on it and it’ll rotate with little resistance.

Hi, I’ve seemingly got the same issue, however the 180 degree servo is the one that’s installed in my truck, and yet as soon as it’s paired, it locks itself into a hard right turn. I can turn left, with the joystick, but as soon as I let go it goes hard right again and clicks away for a second. Is there a way to reset the neutral position?

You probably didn’t install the servo in the neutral position. When it’s connected to the remote control, it tries to move to the actual neutral position. To put the servo in the true neutral position before installation, it needs to be electrically connected to the receiver, and the transmitter and receiver need to be paired.

The calibration process that @ThreeD-Michael mentions is described in the assembly instructions.

Ok great. Is this able to be redone without taking the whole thing out?

I don’t think so. As far as I know, the middle position is structurally predetermined.

You’ll have to remove the gear that drives the steering rack. Then run the centering sequence and then reinstall the gear. It’s a star type drive and will mesh in several positions.
