PSA: Please Allow Parametric Text!

I love Fusion to make designs and Makerlab’s parametric model customized for people who can’t, but they can edit easily. However, MakerLab needs one thing for it to be complete: editable text when imported from A .f3d. This would be a game changer because no longer would Bambu Studio be required to edit text in models!

Anyone else like this? Vote below!

Would you use Editable Text in MakerLab’s Parametic Model Maker (imported from Fusion via F3D)

MakerLab is a collection of tools - many of which are from different developers and some from Bumbu. Are you referring to a specific MakerLab tool, all MakerLab tools in general, or tools from other developers (not Bambu)?

I tried to figure out what you meant, but I couldn’t because there are now over 30 tools on the site. Which of the tools are you referring to?

Perhaps you should upload a few pictures to show people what you mean? Just an idea…

It appears that Text is a plug-in for Fusion and the Fusion version of the Parametric Model Maker doesn’t support any Fusion plug-ins.

There hasn’t been any word when or if plug-ins will be supported.

The last time I had a response from MakerWorld on the topic, they confirmed my guess stayed above for the lack of support.

The Parametric Model Maker using OpenSCAD as the base have this limitation, one of the rare sins for that platform.

As this is a known limitation and the cause is a lack of support for plug-ins, this is unlikely to occur unless:

  1. They are willing to commit the time and likely additional costs to licence the additional functionality (assuming they are running a 3rd party API model.

  2. They create a non standard workaround (hack) that would likely mean having text separate from the model in the design process.

They have done impressive things with the platform, for example the addition of colour support to exports from the OpenSCAD variant, given the desktop OpenSCAD doesn’t have this, it is impressive.

So, it could go either way, just known what you are up against.

I have been parametric modeling for a long time (30+ years). It gets very complicated, very quickly. It can be done. lots of ranges and condition’s. It can be much better than scaling a model. It can keep the gaps the same. or screw size and clearnce correct. (Scaling scales the gaps also)

I wish there was a parametric link for the software I know best (SolidWorks). I have not looked in a long time.

I agree it would be very useful to have a parametric for text. I guess it would not be that hard for BS to read the value and if it has the correct meta data it replaces it. The hard part is the UI. Even simple UI, suffer the problem of people knowing how to use.

I should have been more clear, when you publish a model that was made parametrically in Autodesk Fusion, with a .f3d MakerWorld allows it to be customizable via Parametric Model Maker (after publishing). Currently it only supports numbers, I was saying I hope it supports text also. It currently does not.

It sounds like such an obvious need to have parametric text. I would not be surprised if there was some special format that could be used (just like other programs). Where to find that defined is the problem. I have not looked into the Fusion parametric system with BS. My concept of how it would be implemented is they would add the ability to BS. then let a select few know what to do. After they have the bugs worked out. It is moved to a more formal process of beta testing.

I think a better way to say the same thing is “You have not found a way to do it YET” does not mean there is a way, just you have not found it.
