Purge chute broken part ? filament purge coils have become loose bunch

since a few days, the filament purge are loose bunch of wire, rather than tight coils as before.

this occured after a failed print, real mess of spagetti, and I found some beige bits in the bin

no colour like this since I got the printer, so I thought it could be remains of prints by the previous owner, and cleaned the head and started again.

I found similar symptoms in the Troubleshouting section :

Poop not in tight bunch

Recently, during purge, the poop sprays all over the chute and therefore will not drop down the chute. Before, the poop would form a nice tight bunch that would easily fall down the chute. Could this be due to wet filament? I have a new .40 nozzle so I know it’s not bent.

The extrusion is straight, the prints are ok, but I noticed that the purge is not kept together until it’s dropped at once, it rather flows out.

Could the chute have been damaged ?
or the flap got stuck suddenly ?

answering to myself, after some more look at the printer :
the chute flap is there, and moves freely when pushing the lever

but I noticed that the lever isn’t activated by the head movements

deeper look shows that **the lower back of the head is gone ** :

this is the source of the beige bits I found in among the poop, and some more fall at the back of the printer

while I was in there, I checked the hot end, and found it full of melt PETG, which does not look easy to shift, and could be cause of some blobs dropping on the prints . A good part of the ■■■■ is from wood PLA, printed once before Xmas

I swaped it for a new one, the print now goes well without drops

but the purge flap is still not moving, so time to look for the head rear casing replacement.
The front is showing some cracks too, but is still in place : I may change both at the same time

buying a 2nd hand head may be cheaper than picking parts, but wont be easy

I wanted to check rather the rear cover replacement will be the answer, so printed a replacement back cover, found on Makerworld

when looking at the replacement part next to the original cover, the missing bit is significant :

and once the cover is out, I could see there was another bit part ready to brake :

I didn’t pay attention to the " it suits only my middle cover part " bit, and was able to replace the rear cover, with some gentle persuasion (accès to the upper screws is but those went in

then testing showed that the flap is back to function, with tight coils

It may not stand the abuse loong term, but should do until I get the one I ordered

and I need to fix the sweep / cut of the purge as the second test coil jumped in the plate

but that’ll be another story

edit : order for the original back over is sent, but meanwhile, printing must go on

replacement back cover received, and fitted : all good now
still need to fix the purge drops on the build plate, though
