Purging with less waste?

Why does purging require a seperate tower? Wouldn’t it be possible to purge into the infil and adjust overall density based on purging requirements. Supports could also be used to purge into. I suppose if you didn’t have enough support area for purging then a seperate tower could be used, but this method would still greatly reduce waste.

I don’t actually have an AMS but it looks like it can be wasteful so wondering if this could help to improve this problem.

You can already purge into infill and supports. It is an option in the “Other” settings. It’ll not adjust infill density to purge needs though.

Eno is right - that feature is already there. There are other settings as well. You can tune how much filament volume to purge as well and the size/volume of the purge tower if you are using one.

The stock volumes are a little generous but the tradeoff is having occasional bits of other filaments that weren’t purged out let go and appear in whatever filament is printing. Or not having quite pure colors when the new color starts printing - which frequently ends up next to filament that is pure color after printing for a while. Kind of stands out - even very tiny shading differences.

The stock purge volumes are higher than they need to be for most color switches between filament of the same type. You can turn it down and the worst case result is a little “blurring” of the color transition if you didn’t purge enough.

But.

If you’re printing a dedicated support material, the purge volumes need to be very high or you will end up with support material mixed with the primary filament and the model will be extremely weak along the layer where the transition in filament types occurred.
