QIDI 2 - Enclosed high temp printer - Goldilocks zone?

I’ll admit I’m torn between the Elegoo Centauri (discussed here: Elegoo Centauri Carbon) at $300 and the QIDI Plus4 at $800. But now a third more viable option came onto the radar yesterday, the QIDI Q2.

TL;DR: This is a noteworthy competitor if they can work out the logistics shortfall.

Competition is good for the consumer!!!




The Plus4 has an actively heated chamber and a true 305x305x280mm build surface (unlike the H2D), plus a 350°C nozzle and 120°C bed. Very appealing specs, but the machine is larger than I need and space is limited. The Centauri, on the other hand, still feels half-baked. They just exited early access, now have stock, but still no spare parts available. The last thing I want is to buy a printer, encounter an issue, and wait weeks for parts. To me, that’s not a fully launched product.

What I’d really like is something in between: a smaller build volume but without restrictions on filament or chamber temps.

Enter the QIDI Q2. At $500 it checks most of my boxes and is available now:

  • Ethernet and USB connectivity (not just Wi-Fi)
  • Active chamber heating and high temp nozzle and print bed so the range of filament choices eclipses the Centauri, X1/P1 and matches the QIDI Plus4.
  • Orca support, and their own slicer is essentially a fork of BS/Orca. I tested it last night - limited, but the interface will feel familiar to anyone who has used BS or Orca. Minimal learning curve.

That said, I still have reservations - similar to my concerns with the Centauri:

  • Their AMS (QIDI Box) is $150, but shipping is “two months out.” That kind of delay is frustrating.
  • No spare parts listed yet. Serious concern.
  • No clear details on what ships with the printer.
  • How do you load filament without the AMS?
  • Is there a spool holder?
  • What is the included build plate?
    None of these details are spelled out.

Loyal Moses reviewed the QIDI Box and highlighted issues with the AMS implementation, including the PTFE chain guide. That design undermines what could have been a solid top glass slider for AMS support and instead forces the need for a riser:

By contrast, NeedItMakeIt offered a softer review - plenty of praise, but he received the printer for free and may not want to risk upsetting vendors so my trust-factor is diminished with respect to his objectivity. Like Moses, he focused on AMS feed and overlooked single-spool use:

Overall, the QIDI Q2 has moved up my list. Execution with respect to their logistics and spare parts remains the key question. FYI: I did research their shipping locations and to their credit, they have an established network of multiple shipping points in the US between the east coast and west coast and it appears that this is in their favor as far as not waiting for imports. It also may shield them short term from tariffs as the product here now will be under the old tariff.

I looked at their customer terms and conditions, which seem very restrictive. An AI analysis flagged several issues. While not as severe as Bambu Lab’s, they are still problematic. I’d be interested in hearing how others view this.

Yeah, I assume you are referring to the multi head tool. Cool idea but…

I saw the Snapmaker tool and set it aside as still in the science-project/garage phase. I will not consider a product that is only available through Kickstarter. There are no consumer protections and it is rare for a Kickstarter project to deliver on time and on spec. A presentation or CAD rendering is not enough - I want to see real hardware with independent reviews, not a single demo unit sent out only to influencers and the media.

For me, credible availability means:

  1. Off-the-shelf price.
  2. Inventory on hand.
  3. Explicit warranty.
  4. Explicit ship date and price.
  5. General public availability with no restrictions.

They asked for $100K and raised over $9 million. Show me the product, not the promise and engineering prototypes in the hands of a few influencers or media simply does not count. This should require a whole lot of disclaimers when these reports are published because this is how people get ripped off.

Edit: I should have added that a friend of mine who purchased the Prusa Multihead, just sold it because he said it was long on promise and short on execution, the multihead kept getting fouled up. Whereas that may be OK for a hobbyist, he has a printing business and didn’t have time for a premature product. he was very disappointed because he’s a Prusa fan and expected better.

I have been burned and rarely go early adopter these days.

It is one thing to purchase from a company like Apple via a fulfilment company like Amazon that honours refunds, repairs and replacements without any complaints and the 3D printer world, which is made up of companies that rarely honour anything, and their customer service teams forget about the customer and fail to provide the support.

An earlier edit of this had McDonald’s instead of Apple; it is on my mind for a future model reason (and litigation they issued against me).

Indeed I share your view on the Q2. Very interesting indeed.

Initially I thought it was a facelifted Plus 4 but that turned out to be wrong. Although specs’s are very similar, the Q2 has a slightly smaller print area and very different print head.

Still, I am very happy with my Plus 4. Especially now that I have set-up my Qidi Box AMS. While it is still to early to give a proper review, there are a few things I can confirm.

  • Most importantly: Yes, it works. I haven’t tried long multi-color prints yet, but after some minor initial troubles managed to get multi-color printing working. Interestingly, it can keep 45°C while printing, 65°C when drying.
  • Indeed, wiring/PTFE’s are a mess. However, with a bit more experience under my belt, I may look into the ability to reposition the AMS and shorten the PTFE’s in a similar manner as I did with my Bambu AMS1. Let’s not forget that the AMS1 does need a few mods to work reliably :wink: So a few tweaks do not have me overly concerned.
  • Considering that Qidi’s tend to be more interesting when printing high performance materials, I am lightly concerned about the thin PTFE’s used. I have not gone deeper into that but may consider replacing them with the thicker Bambu PTFE’s.
  • Similarly, CF-filled filaments are likely to wear down the AMS filamemt entries over time. Unlike Bambu AMS1’s, they are metallic, but there’s quite a stretch between them and the filament. I haven’t found AMS savers for them yet, but I daresay it is only a matter of time.

A few other items that may be of interest to you:

  • In Qidi’s EU shop, the Qidi AMS (ordered individually for €228,-) has a delivery time of 20 days after ordering. In my case, it was shipped two days earlier than promised to arrive exactly on time straight from China with very good tracking. I could even spot the plane touching down 56Min earlier than scheduled :joy:

  • Qidi may have its own online shop. But they also trade on Amazon. Just received a new set of Plus4 silicone socks ordered from Qidi through Amazon today. Addendum: I could order the Q2 (no AMS) through Amazon for arrival next Tuesday for €549,- right now. Qidi shop €499,-, shipping within 7 days.

  • With Qidi occupying a niche, there are far fewer software updates.(~3-6 Months between updates), print profiles must be expected to contain gross errors (like 40°C bed temp for the textured PEI with Bambu PETG :sweat_smile:) and there are far fewer helpful users.

  • But there are some key advantages: Support is not lightning quick, but they do read the questions and respond appropriately in a reasonable time.

  • High temp printing :grinning:

This is one I’m eyeing as well. If any of you end up purchasing it, I expect some reviews! Qidi has a reputation for doing the high temp and chamber stability stuff with excellent quality. I was hoping they would continue with 300+mm size but they must be waiting for the Qidi 2 Pro Plus or something lol.

I took one look at that Snapmaker multi head and dismissed it. Maybe it will print faster with far less waste of filament, but all the filament is out in the open air. Thats fine if your have a conditioned shop with low humidity, but for those like me who battle constant high humidity, eventually those spools will be sputtering and causing massive losses in filament on the printers bed. It will be a viable product if and when it has a feeder/dryer like the AMS 2 or similar, but until then, not for my shop.

Also the H2D can use the full bed if the design and color choices line up. I have used both sides at one time for large jobs. It does impose limitations for multicolor prints that overlap, but there are work arounds.

That fails to acknowledge my point. My grievance is with the conflict of interest of the review.

The plus 4 was sort of a dumpster fire in the beginning. To be honest it still sort of is with the whole peizo sensor thing still going on. I hope they learned from that release and implemented all the fixes into the Q2. It looks promising. The plus 5 should be solid whenever that happens, but I’d skip the plus 4 unless you don’t mind spending a little more money and a whole lot of time fixing it.

From what I’m hearing, the QIDI box is still a dumpster fire lol. I had the QIDI box for a whole day. Wound up selling it before even opening the package.

The TL;DR: The Qidi Q2 with the Qidi Box is better than the X1C as far as print quality and utility, and is definitely in the “Goldilocks zone” for price/performance.

First, some background:

We have a Bambu X1C where I work, and I was the one that set it up. Because we could not risk leaking any of our data, I had to set it up in LAN-only mode, but even that was questionable. Eventually, I installed the X1Plus alternate firmware, and this allowed the security required. I set up the printer in November of 2024, and it still works great. The hardware of the X1C is top notch…it’s just the increasingly bad firmware that are the problem.

So, I spent a lot of time doing research for buying a printer for myself, with the possible candidates being (in alphabetic order):

  • Anycubic Kobra S1
  • Bambu X1C
  • Creality K2 Plus
  • Elegoo Centauri Carbon
  • Qidi Plus 4
  • Sovol SV08

After a coworker (with a lot of 3D printing experience) was disappointed by the Kobra S1, that fell off the list. The K2 Plus had such bad long-term reviews that it also was removed. After much research, the SV08 was still too “tinkery” for me. The Plus 4 had some bad reviews, but Qidi seemed to be fixing the issues, which was good, but still worrisome. The Centauri Carbon hung around because it was so inexpensive, but the lack of a multi-material system eventually dropped it out.

And then, like you, I heard about the Qidi Q2, and it seemed to tick all the boxes: good price, good features, and decent reviews in general. I still hesitated, but finally on Nov 24 I ordered the Q2 with the Qidi Box. The printer was delivered a week later (Dec 2), and the Qidi Box two weeks after that (Dec 16), despite the “2 months” warning on the website.

My first prints were some quick tests of PLA with no tuning, and they were solid…some minor stringing and flaws that went away after tuning the filament.

OTOH, I starting printing some pieces with the included Qidi ABS Odorless filament, and it was absolutely perfect out of the box. I printed a high capacity desiccant bin and some filament clips for various vendor’s spools, and was shocked there was no flaw I could find. I printed the fuzzy skin samples and box in PLA (on just 4 plates due to the larger bed), and found some flaws with the right rear part of the plate that I am currently investigating, but I think it’s an issue with the exhaust fan being close to that part of the plate.

Overall, the heated chamber makes ABS and other “engineering” filaments as easy to print as PLA on the X1C. The print quality is outstanding, especially after tuning filament. The Qidi Box does what it should in switching filaments, although it is a bit slower than the Bambu AMS. But, you can also use abrasive filaments in the Box and it dries filaments (and can heat the Box while printer for some drying), which is a big win. The Box comes with a riser that solves the PTFE tube rubbing issue, and I did not follow the instructions to route the output of the filament buffer through the hole in the riser, and instead ran the filament through the old passthrough. I then printed a filament Y (in ABS) and put it inside the printer on the chain, so now I can bypass the Box (required for soft TPU) without pulling any PTFE tubes. The Q2 box kit also comes with some parts that fix issues that have been found by Qidi and are part of the new Q2 builds. This seems to bode well for their desire to support the printer and the end user.

And, you don’t have to do anything special to turn on “LAN only” mode…the printer screen makes it easy, and it really works. Although not Mainline Klipper, the fact that the firmware is easy to customize is also a big plus. I’ve changed some config, written some gcode macros, and changed the machine start and end gcode to match the printer changes.

My only real complaints after about 100 hours of printing are the LED lighting isn’t as good as it could be and Orca Slicer has not yet released a “stable” version with full support for the Qidi Box. Qidi Studio is based on Bambu Studio and does a good enough job. I think some people will complain about the overall speed of the printer (chamber heating is a bit slow, there’s a lot of startup before the print, filament swap is slower than AMS, and Z movement speed is capped for safety), but once it starts printing your model, it’s basically the same as the X1C.
