Question on the bed-levelling process

I have a question on the actual bed levelling process and how it exactly works. When I do a bed levelling on my A1 - the nozzle checks all positions with 3 “dips” on the individual spots. I THINK my H2C did exactly this in the beginning as well (500hrs in now).
However, I do have the feeling, that the process changed - so I was observing a little closer. The number of “dips” (or in this case the raising and lowering of the bed) varies dramatically from point to point. On most, it does it two to four times with a few records of up to 13 times raising and lowering the bed.

Does this have any meaning? Is anything getting more “uneven”?

If it doesn’t get a good reading it repeats that spot. On X1/P1 you can use these retries to determine if the tramming tension is out of range. If this is happening on your A1 check the hotend screws and hall sensor clearance, if it’s happening on an H2 I’m not sure what the cause would be but any of those could be causing it.

By any chance have you been printing high-temp filament or heating your chamber to high temperatures?

My H2C has been doing many dips on certain spots as well.. including rehoming and redoing the entire process sometimes. I feel like its part of the reason im having first and top layer issues. Still trying to figure things out with support though.

I’ve noticed this as well but its never failed to calibrate. I have recently done another belt tensioning as well as clean/lube/full calibration everything per the procedure same before and after. I’m not having issues just noticed it will have a few spots it retries.

When it’s touch probing the bed it’s looking for consistent readings in all three touches - within a certain tolerance, of course. If the readings aren’t “clustered” as expected, it will do a re-probe until it’s satisfied with the results, then it will move on. If it doesn’t obtain consistency, it will throw a Z homing error.

Just to clarify - I did not have a single bad print (at least one that could not be explained). I was just wondering about the process itself as the leveling seems to take longer now. Then I was a bit shocked when I was standing next to it and the bed was moving up and down for what felt like an eternity. The printer also never failed to calibrate.

Does anybody have more insight into WHY this repetitive movements are necessary. I would imagine the nozzle makes contact with the bed and the printer notes: Ah, that’s 0.02mm off. Maybe verifies the result….but 13 times?

if it’s filthy it can even decide to go wipe the nozzle or such before turning back to try the bed.

I usually do a full clean at that point

What exactly do you mean with „full clean“? Cleaning the nozzles?

I noticed mine was taking longer and ran a full bed leveling from the calibration menu and it seems to have sped things back up again.

My left nozzle has always taken longer than the right though. From what I’ve seen, it’s pretty normal.

I’ve noticed the same thing on my H2S at 250 hrs. Was curious but it isn’t effecting prints, just something I noticed. Nice to know, TY.
