Imagine a disk that’s 3 inches in diameter and 1/4" thick. Imagine that it’s divided into 12 segments. The segments are translucent, but they are separated by an opaque divider. The Bambu will do that with enough filament changes. How would such a structure be programmed for printing? Will it print all of each segment in a given layer before changing to the opaque divider, or will it change filament back and forth over and over?
It will do only one filament change per layer per color, in your example all of the opaque will be printed in one go.
How would you draw that in Fusion, for example? Would the parts all be separate bodies to which you would assign their colors?
If you mean a shape like a pie (think dessert), with the sections denoting cuts being opaque and the remainder being translucent, then the model will have two colours.
- Colour 1, translucent
- Colour 2, opaque colour undisclosed
In order to print this model, the printer, in combination with an AMS Will printer the model layer by layer, translucent parts first, followed by opaque. You would need to set the print sequence to do this. The order is important to limit bleed from the opaque to the translucent portions.
If the model is 1/4 inch thick, (1 inch equals 25mm for ease of understanding) divided into 4, so 6.2mm thick.
Printing 0.2mm layer height, that will be 31 layers. Two filament changes per layer, including the first purge, will require 62 changes of filament.
The translucent portions will not remain translucent due to the nature of printing using an FDM printer.
You can increase the overall translucency by planning your print and making appropriate changes to the profile. However, 6.2mm is thick to remain translucent throughout.

This is a calibration model designed to help you tune your settings for your materials. It is not a magic pill to make any so called transparent filament see through. All filaments branded as transparent are lying as the best they can hope for is a degree of translucency. How well your material gets there is dependent on the effort you put in and how good your source filament is.
That’s the concept I have, but how would you DRAW it to specify the separate colors? Would each pie piece be a separate body?
Yes, each piece you wish to have as a separate colour would require a means of making it one or the other colour.
There are two common ways.

Separate parts, you then select all those you wish to be translucent and assign them to that filament, select the remaining parts and assign them to the other filament.

Paint the colour, this requires a design created with paint painting in mind. Harder for the model you are talking about as you tend to paint triangles within a design. A well constructed design will achieve it though.
I prefer the separation of parts method as it guarantees the quality end result and is usually quicker to assign colours in the slicer.
