Questions about supports

I’m new to 3D printing and the Bambu Labs A1 is my first printer, With that said I have a question about creating certain supports. I recently downloaded a model of Makerworld and noticed the supports on as being fantastic. They are easy to remove and leave no scarring as I call it on the model. Basically they are a tree style support with various branches coming up to the 90 degree 'ish overhangs. The tree supports however do not actually touch the model itself, There is another layer that the branches connect to. When you remove them the “support” layer easily pulls off with the tree branches attached. I’ve been looking around on how to do this or what this is called and can’t find anything. Basically when I do tree supports, The branches are touching the model. When you remove the tree branches each branch gets pulled off. Some leave scarring as I call it from the spot the circle of the branch touched.

How do you setup Bambu Slicer to create this style of supports?

You select “Tree” for the support type. Everything else is automatic.

I typically use “Tree (Default)”. However, When I do this the trees do not get created onto a separate removable layer, They are just connected straight to the model. I have to take a needle nose pliers and break/pull them off. The support shown in the photos are connected to layer that just peeled right off and left no marks on the model. Is there something wrong with my slicer?

You must have inadvertently turned “interface layers” off, or maybe set it to 0 spacing so it’s a solid layer. Compare the settings for supports for the model with the supports that came off easy with one you did where they didn’t come off easy.

You can see the support layers in the slicer. So you can also inspect the top of the supports in each model to see what the interface layer on the support looks like.

The quality of the support interface is heavily dependent on filament flow. If you are over extruding even a little, the supports will be harder to get off. Sub-optimal flow calibration can do this, but also filament that has absorbed a lot of humidity can also do it (moisture generates steam in the hot extruder and that pushes excess filament out). If you’re not cooling enough or extruding too hot, that can also contribute to sticky supports.

Properly tuned flow with dry filament, supports should almost fall off.

When you open the .3mf you downloaded from Makerword it’s going to change all the support settings to make the supports like that. Just open that model and make note of the settings and move them to a default profile. You can take a screen shot or open two instances of Bambu Studio.

I will try this when I get off work and see how that works. Thank you.

Regarding the flow, I did notice when I brought my AMS colors into the model instead of the downloaded models default spools, My spools had a 1.01 flow calculation and the downloaded model had a .97 flow. Being new to this, Really don’t know what all this means and learning as I go. I do understand it’s means my filament is going to flow more than the models setting. I however was not sure if this was due to the filament presets as I was using Bambu Labs filament and the model downloaded was just a “default undefined” spool.

Use Strong Trees, only on build plate. This will make the lots of little branches you saw, which helps it come off in one piece without damaging any detail. Doing them only on the build plate will have it come up and make angles to reach areas rather than building a support off your model surface.

I’ll give it a try. Been playing around a little with what the others have suggested. The supports are getting easier to deal with, Still playing around with the settings to see what works and don’t. Thanks for the suggestion.
