Random gaps and snapping noise mid print

Recently out of nowhere, my p1p’s prints are missing entire layers, resulting in ugly gaps and weak prints. Whenever this happens, there is a loud snapping or clicking noise. It sounds like plastic breaking. Here is a picture of a recent print.

It only seems to happen for a layer, then resumes to normal. I have already checked all of the components in the extruder, and they seem to be functioning and moving smoothly. I believe it is a problem with the hotend, as it has not been replaced in about 500 hrs of print time, and is showing some signs of wear. I would like to make sure that the hotend is the problem before spending $35
Thanks in advance

Check your filament path (PTFE Tubes & AMS) & the spool itself for a tangle.

I have, they all seem to be normal

Could it be temperature related? Either heatbed not keeping the temp or someone is opening/closing windows in the vicinity which is affecting the temp of the print?

It’s definitely not heatbed related, the temp in the room does fluctuate, but not enough to change the temp of the hotend. I think I’ll just replace the whole hotend assembly in case it is caused by a faulty thermistor or heater cartridge. Thanks for the ideas.

Update: Replaced the hotend, and now the printer works perfectly.
