Random Layer Bumps on Spherical Model

Problem Description

I have created a model myself in Fusion 360 for my P1S printer. On the outer walls, there are random bumps in the layers. It looks like the layer is moved a bit on the Y axis. These bumps are completely random.

I believe this might be related to the spherical nature of my print, and I’m unsure about the proper setup for such geometries.

I’ve tried different prints with the same filament, and they all turned out fine.

My Setup

  • Printer: P1S with AMS
  • Filament: PETG (also tried PLA with same results)
  • Preset: 0.08mm High Quality BBL X1C

Modified Settings (Latest Attempt)

  • Ironing enabled
  • Infill: Adaptive cubic
  • Top surface pattern: Concentric
  • Outer wall: 40 mm/s
  • Inner wall: 100 mm/s
  • Support: Standard
  • Sparse infill: Adaptive cubic

Troubleshooting Steps Taken

  • Changed outer/inner walls settings - no improvement
  • Reduced speed for outer walls - no improvement
  • Tried variable layer height - no improvement
  • Exported to STEP instead of STL - no improvement
  • Cleaned Z-axis screws multiple times using different tools and added new lubricant - no improvement
  • Printed a Z-wobble test tower which looks good
  • Printed a calibration cube which looks perfect
  • Performed various calibrations - no improvement

Since other models print correctly, I suspect there must be something specific about my model or slicer settings that’s causing the issue.

There is a whole lot going on here but nothing in this list below will remedy or have an impact on what is shown here.

Let’s focus on the basics and the most obvious problem. This image will serve as a good starting point.

These layer deviations are generally caused by improper tool head travel or obstructions in your filament feed. You didn’t mention whether you are using an AMS, but the first troubleshooting step would be to try reproducing this shape using a direct spool without the AMS. If the problem goes away, then something in your AMS feed is obstructing smooth flow. Go to the wiki for diagnostic steps and inspect your PTFE feed tubes for alignment and binding. This issue can also be caused if your PTFE tube is snagging on something during the print, so check that too.

The fact that the ridges appear uniform across the X-Y travel but non-uniform between layers could be due to dirty carbon rods or improperly lubricated Z-screws. To rule this out, follow the P1 maintenance procedure in the wiki.

Based on your forum join date, it looks like you may have only recently received this printer. Maintenance shouldn’t be needed yet, but you would be the second person this week to report this issue, making me wonder if the factory is not properly lubricating the Z-axis rods. Another factor could be belt tensioning, but unless you are skilled at this, you are more likely to make it worse. There is a procedure in the wiki that walks you through it, but this should be a last resort. I would investigate feed problems first.

I recommend the following basic diagnostic steps to confirm printer function and then upload photos to this thread so we can help you further.

Right-click and select a cube primitive. Do this twice because one of the cubes should be rotated 45 degrees. This will highlight any problems with carbon rods, stepper motors, and belt feeds. I won’t go into why unless you’re interested. Here’s how to do it: Remember to move the first object out of the way, as you might think the second object didn’t work when in fact it’s overlaying the first model.

Here’s a tip. You’ve got really good light already on the sample blue object you posted so you’ve mastered that. However, adding addition angles to share with us will help us help you. One additional trick I might suggest is that you will find that get much better images for us to diagnose if you hold the camera further away and use the zoom function rather than trying to hold the camera close and having the autofocus fight with you.
