I used to use reload from disk a lot. But it stopped working. I use it with STEP files from Solidworks 2025, BS 2.2.2.56
It used to not work sometimes. Now it is always.
getting that functionality back would be very useful. Even better is the option for reload all.
Maybe reload selected. reload plate, reload same model (10 copies of the same file), or reload all possible.
I understand how there are some functions that make it so you can’t reload. But knowing what those functions are would be helpful. I would guess coloring a face would make it not work. I want it too. but that would be a complex algorithm. But coloring the whole should be simple.
Looking for any ideas to try. It helps in itterating a design. Are others using it?
The basic concept is right click on the object and select “reload from disk”. it then replaces the current object with the current file by the same name. Keeping the same orientation, location, overall filament…
There are some complications with multi body files. or colorized.
I expect a generational step in slicers is near; Orca Bambu etc are about maxed out. Reload is just one tool that works for a particular workflow and is good for that; I use it often. Downside of course is the single object use.
Another tool is setting .step files to split to objects on import. Not fancy but it improves the experience.
Perhaps a network error? Copy mount4.step onto c:\ drive and check if you can load/reload from there. All my files live on a remote s:\ drive with no problems.
Do you have a spare computer you can load an earlier slicer version on? btw; describe your slicer.
2.3.1 Orcaslicer reloads stl and obj just fine. No data to share on step.
I have always assumed every time I use this, that all “painted on things” will be annihilated. Seams, supports, color, cuts, etc. Do not expect any of that to survive, only the positioning.
The M is a local drive, not a network. will give it a try from the c: when I get a chance.
the this problem has been a thorn in my side for the past 6 months. So it has been over several versions of BS I am currently on 2.3.0.70

I prefer the quality of using STEP over STL. Worth using STL if reloading works.
The reason I prefer STEP is when using a STL all the movements of the printer are strait. It simulates curved surface with lots of short strait lines. But step uses some curved lines to the printer. It is higher quality further in the development path. The other part is the file can be loaded in engineering grade programs without loss in quality.

Reload for step file only works during the same session.
the short description is:
import a STEP file.
save the 3mf file.
close BS.
open BS and open the 3mf
try to reload the STEP.
my testing is it does not reload. part of my process is design, print, close program, do other stuff, refine, repeat… Unrealistic to leave BS open. Effectivly making the reload not work. It does work for STL files.
Can someone please confirm that a step file does not survive a close of BS.
I wish STEP worked. It is a benefit that the model is not faceted like you find with STL.
STLs are either very big because of so many facets or practically useless because of too few. There are exceptions with geometric parts.

reloading STEP files works as long as you don’t close BS. It is a known problem with BS.
what I am describing is:
Inport a STEP.
Save 3mf file
close BS
open 3mf
try to reload STEP file. Does not work.
It does work if you don’t close BS. It works fully if you use STL.
