I have a model that requires a 1/4-20 bolt and the model has a SDFL. A guy contacts me and says ”I have extended your Featherboard for european M8 Screws. But I can not upload it. Your Licence prevents any modifiactions
If you want you can upload the file or change licence.
Then I send you my file “ Me, being naive reply to him explaining how to upload the file to my models page. I hear nothing and do not see his supposed metric version posted. So I click on his name and here ALL of his models are remixes of other models, go figure…… Question, should I report this guy because he tried to get me to change my license so he could post a remix?
Not sure what can be done if the digital license allows remixes. If it does not, you can report to MW to have it taken down.
I did not change my license so he can’t post it. However I’ll keep my eyes open for it here and elsewhere.
Must admit I don’t quite understand this. He’s asked you to change licence so he can post OR send you the file to upload. I can’t see how that is wrong, you can’t tell him how to upload to your models page surely as it wouldn’t be a remix model but a print profile? Print profiles as I understand it (happy to be corrected) are for files with print changes, walls, infill? Speed etc and not for changed models. As I see it he can’t upload to your page as it is a remix all that can happen is, you change licence and he posts, he sends you the file and you post as your model, he posts it up as original design which it is not and would definitely be wrong.
Are the remixes on his page remixes of files which don’t allow them? If so report them and they’ll get taken down. If they are normal remix’s of models that allow it, or did when model created then they’ve done nothing wrong?
I may be misunderstanding your point.
Unless something has changed there is nothing preventing him from posting a profile change of my model on my model page with a SDFL. In doing so as it get downloaded I will get the model points (the greater of the two points given) and he will get the 3 profile points. I have no problem with this, I have had this done to a couple of my models which is why I offered to help and sent him instructions on how to do it. If I change the license he then can take the model and post it on his site and I get no points. I think the “I will send you the file” part was the scam as he has not responded to me or posted a profile change on my model page. He essentially wanted me to give him permission to take my model by changing the license. But I could be wrong? The models on his site appear to be legit remixes so he has done nothing wrong there. But, is he Fishing or Phishing for models?
Well the remix thing was changed few days ago by MW, now you could allow to do them, but you still need to allow it. Could you share the user involved?
Are you referring to this?
If so doesn’t this allow someone to take your work and post it to their site as long as they keep it in MW?
I prefer not to share the user as I am not positive there was malicious intent, could just have been a misunderstanding or bad thanslation etc…
But if he uploads a profile it’s actually a different model as it has changed holes. I don’t believe that is what profiles are for, they are for print settings.
A hole dimension change from imperial to metric is not a print setting and could lead to problems if people select it and get something they are not expecting.
I agree with what you are saying that maybe he wants to get the model points but it’s entirely possible that the profile upload thing is just causing confusion as he doesn’t have a new print profile he has a remixed design, not the same thing.
If you change the licence so he can upload then indeed he would get all the points, message him a disposable email address and ask him to send the file to you and that you can post it up. If he doesn’t want to do that then yes he probably was after the points!
But t don’t encourage a changed design in print profiles as you’ll probably end up with someone down rating your design when they click the wrong one and get a hole size that doesn’t work, you definitely don’t want that.
Remix culture is dead…
Encourage them to post as a new print profile. That is not really what print profiles are for, but that is what they have turned into.
99 percent of the time, the uploader is the one that has the duty to police the print profiles on their models. If you like it, keep it. If you dont, report it and it will most likely be taken down.
Although, I encourage printing the file if reasonable. Most of the time people do not print profiles as much if they are not from the designer.
No, that is a question, unless you were forced to do something under threat, nothing actually occurred.
Boohoo to him, he did something for himself, that is fine, why he thinks his effort should be shared is lost on me. He could ask you to make a version for the specific change he made, you can say no.
I think you are.
For clarification, I believe you do not mean a change to you profiles, but one of their own.
This would be a back door remix, changes to the model have nothing to do with profiles which are all about printing.
If the person did upload a print profile where the underlying model was changed, you need to report it as a stealth remix.
Looking at your model the parts with the hole are separate bits anyway so why don’t you suggest he posts just those up as a model but with a link to yours saying they are to be used for your model where metric is required?
They cannot be used by themselves as have no function without it so you would get downloads for your model and indeed maybe more as 2 points of origin for traffic. (he of course would get points as well)
Now the concept of wondering about someone wanting to use your model for points when your model itself has a trademarked logo in it is another matter
(looks great though!)
p.s. love the laser hold downs downloaded and next on print list
To rephrase his intent:
“I made a variant that worked for me. Others might find it useful. I can’t share it, due to your license. Do you want to open up your license to remixes?”
Simple yes or no suffices, there’s no drama here
Before makerworld made designers overly concerned with people “stealing their company scrip” this was called “remix culture”. CC-BY-SA
Only where money is involved, it’s still thriving in organic genuine spaces
ND is only popular on maker world because it is baked into the defaults. ND is the smaller category on printables, thingiverse
Well, you probably can’t… but you can certainly make fun of his metric conversion skills. I understand 100% where you’re coming from when you say…
He most likely is phishing for models… you can tell by the fact that he was suggesting an M8 instead of an M6.
Let’s face it, a 1/4" is 6.35mm whereas an M6 is 6mm… what do you use for standard tolerances… .2mm? It’d be called “force treading” or cross-threading into a softer material. In fact, an M8 is closer to a 5/16" (7.94mm instead of 8mm) and in both cases the thread pitch is the “bigger” issue.
Well, that depends on people’s math skills I suppose. Had the original been 5/16" to match the M8, it’s be a .06mm change or had the “remixer” suggested a more appropriate M6, the difference would have been .35mm which is equivalent to .014 inch… I mean, sure… that’s the FDM equivalent of what… Michael Jackson in the 80s vs Michael in the 90s?
In this particular case, I don’t see any issues with that…
Thanks everyone for the replies, very informative. One question though. If a model has a CC license and someone posts what would qualify as a remix on that models site is this allowed?
This changes dramatically depending on WHICH CC licence it is published under.
Read this to understand which licences allow what.
Any changes to a model are a remix.
I didn’t do the maths to convert as no interest in imperial so no idea how close it is
I take your point on those numbers but the point stands it’s still a remix as the model is modified. A pretty poor one sure I agree there:+1:
Got it, never paid much attention to that as it never concerned me. The reason I asked is I posted what would qualify as a remix to this model. It’s license is CC-BY-SA.
