I’m sure this is the wrong place to post this, and it’s mostly just a wondering out loud kind of thing.
I’m also sure it’s because the market for something like this is rather small, but why are most reusable spool designs essentially the same? Hex/honeycomb/gyroid, mostly just infill patterns. I feel like this would be the perfect opportunity to make reusable spools in the design of car wheels.
If I had ANY ability to design things and/or use any of the various cad software, I would do it myself, even if it was just for myself.
I’m not really asking/trying to commission designs, again, just more or less wondering out loud why no one has done it.
(I did find one, but it’s made especially for esun cardboard spools which requires the sides be torn off, and as an ams lite user that seems wholly unnecessary)
I also find it strange that they are almost all the same, but more on the technical side. The pattern doesn’t matter much to me, although hexagons are a bit overused.
One issue with a car wheel design is that the sides of the spool are almost certainly the side that was on the printbed, therefore patterns are possible but geometry hard. You can have a core and two sides that are printed on the inside and in that case it might be possible to have some more fun with the design!
Other than that, most spools are a remix of Bambu’s spool, I believe the files are somewhere on the wiki.
You should be able to remix it in TinkerCad, just cut of the side, design a new side, and merge them together. I think this could be an excellent beginner project!
The sides of car wheel tend not to be flat, the dimensions inside the AMS are restricted and the gears in it sometimes fight the spool, strength is key.
The spools must also fit the AMS lite, they must also work on an external spool of the A series and the one from the P & X series.
The read the designs are simplistic is the design has to be multi functional. The side designs you mentioned are there to reduce filament whilst attempting to retain strength. Using infill patterns saves a lot of effort.
If they were meant to be decorative p, more would be done.
And it would indeed not work on the AMS but it might work on the AMS lite. My Prusament also sits about 15mm off centre, you have width enough there. I think it could look neat although I personally also don’t care for it either. But I also wouldn’t buy that clock.
I mean this is closer to what I’m talking about, but sitting in my car just looking at other cars wheels, I don’t see why they couldn’t be made into spool designs.
Then again, I’m also dumb and the idea part of my brain and the put idea into practice part aren’t connected…at all
While I would not want my spools to be car wheels, they are much more on display on an AMS Lite and I do like the dual color spool prints that I have seen like this one:
Nope, mine is also just an opinion? I think dual colour can look nice so I thought I’d throw in a make I received that I thought looked stunning. Just to represent varying opinions
