Ridges/grooves when head resumes top fill

After about 600 print hours my P1S started producing surface artifacts like the ones in the picture. The photo was taken mid-print; the ridges and grooves are less noticeable on the final top layer, but they’re still there.

I compared with some of my older prints and those artifacts weren’t present. They appear when the head skips a region and then returns to fill it. It almost seems like the head isn’t resuming in the exact same position.

Filament is PETG, surface pattern is “Monotonic line”.

So far I’ve tightened the belts, cleaned, and lubricated everything, but the issue persists. What could be causing this?

Try a flow rate calibration. Those usually help get rid of those lines.

I did flow rate calibration before I noticed those lines, then did the calibration again. Nothing changed, lines still present.

Coincidentally, I’m here for the exact same problem. Technically, I had a question about the flow rate calibration, but what led me to that was some lines just like yours where the lines are supposed to meet, but look like they overlap a little. LIke you, I believe my flow rate is set correctly.

Yes, the lines in your picture look very similar. Did you find a solution?

No, not yet. On recalibrating the filament, I raised the flow ratio a very small amount - around 1%, but I don’t think that will be a solution. The part is reprinting now, not for that minor defect in the top layer, but because I made another mistake on it.

I would try recalibrating everything and cleaning your nozzle. Sometimes if the nozzle is clogged you may get issues.

I recalibrated everything and even replaced the nozzle with a brand new one. Then printed the same part. The result looked exactly the same.

Try under-extrusion a bit more, like 0.90 or 0.85

You will be surprised

Hmmm, your nozzle may be worn out a bit, or your filament could be wet causing poor adhesion

These lines still appear after installing a brand new nozzle. And they look the same with fresh filament just out of the box and after drying the filament for 8 hours. Interestingly, this issue is not present when printing the topmost layer, but underlying layers still show through.

Slight underextrusion seems to mostly fix the issue. But why does it appear in the first place if flow ratio was calibrated correctly?

  • It is correct on small flat thin object, your print is in different shape
  • You’re printing PETG, and PETG likes to underextrusion a bit
