Rusty surface

Good morning everyone,
I’m new here, though I’ve been quietly following the discussions for a long time and have owned the XC1 since it first went on sale. I have a general question about finishing: I’ve designed a part and would like to give it a rust finish right at the modeling stage. Up until now, I’ve been using a mix of epoxy resin and silica sand… This works really well in principle, but it tends to chip off occasionally if the model gets dropped! Does anyone have any ideas on how I can give my model a rough, rusty surface texture?
Thanks!
Regards, flachtang

Check out the fuzzy skin feature in Bambu Studio.

Another thing you may find useful is the texture tool recently created by CNC Kitchen - it’s called BumpMesh.

Good luck!

Some design programs allow applying textures to parts using photographic and other images.

I use Fusion and it is one that lets you edit mesh surfaces like that. I applied a wood grain texture to the back plate and a hammertone-like texture to the knocker parts. It can really make a model pop but can also blow up the size of the model files.

Fuzzy skin in Bambu Studio now has several noise types that might give you the effect you’re after. I think the voronoi type should work. If you don’t want the rust texture everywhere you can paint in on with fuzzy skin painting.

Wax based rubs are quite good

Try experimenting with BumpMesh (by CNCKitchen):

Search online for a rust texture and try the custom map feature to generate a texture on the model, something like:
