I have a santa head, about 3 inches high, sits on a base that contains lights. it is about 50 years old. hollow inside.
I’d like to get it scanned, or i could take multiple photos (on a turntable) and provide to someone to create image for me (I don’t have scanner, just my phone and/or good camera)
any help appreciated, i’d liketo preserve this santa head, and make a copy. It is a family heirloom. It is made of glass, has fallen once,i’ve epoxied it back together.
if scanned/modeled, i think it actually would print well,as there are nt many overhangs, protruding areas, etc.
again, any advice/assistance is appreciated, thanks
thanks for reply.
i may look at them, but did not want to get into the scanning, editing software at this point, just wanted to preserve this santa since it is out on countertop for christmas
a followup.
i saw a program, POLYCAM, “free”. I took 60 pictures of santa - put him on a small turntable, set camera up on tripod, rotated santa and took pictures (different angles also)
I UPLOADED them to polycam, and WOW, it actually looks very nice, got good detail ! SO, i went to DOWNLOAD - but STL format is in the paid version. I don’t want to spend $150.00 or so to do santa, so sadly, santa will sit uncompleted. BUT, I know my photo’s provided good detail to do the job.
any way the Raptor pro software could use the photo’s and create this? if it DOES do it well, you’re welcome to use the santa model for your own use, I’m just trying to preserve a childhood heirloom and do a new light base, other ideas with it
anyway, thanks, have a great day !
if it CAN use photo’s, i can put them in OneDrive and private message you a link
thanks anyway !
the polycam has a BASIC mode, free trial for 7 days, but you have to enter credit card, and i’ve been hacked multiple times for data theft, and i do not want to enter a credit card and then have to reverse it immediately. maybe i’ll generate a virtual card number and enter it…
thanks !
ok, did a virtual number, and am testng the STL. actually not too bad, but lots of artifact at edges - am trying to refine their processing of the model.
but worth experimenting
A little late, but for next time: Get the free version of 3DF Zephyr Free. It offers all the features of the professional version, except that the number of photos is limited. You don’t need a credit card or anything else, and there’s no time limit. Just use it.
I haven’t found anything better that is free and professional.
The program creates an .obj file for you. You can then open it either directly in the slicer or in Blender and convert it to an stl file.
it doesn’t look bad at all, sure you’re loosing some details, but some of them wouldn’t even be printable. I’d say it does need a bit of sharpening, especially around the eyes, you might want to give a look at nomad sculpt if you have an ipad, it’s not super expensive and you’d be able to load the STL and do some fine tuning there > with the apple pencil it’s relatively easy to get some of those sharper edges in, and even some more detail
RetroSharky, thanks for reply.
I did find that online, but as it just went to an OBJ file, and then more work to get it to STL file, i did not want to tackle yet another step. I may re-look at it; can you provide more detail as to how it gets the OBJ file to an STL file?
it’s not that i don’t mind learning stuff. My desk has about 100 projects on it now. I do great with fusion, boxes, circles, making lots of things for workshop, maintenance, etc. BUT, i did (do) not have the energy to get into the 3d modeling stuff (yet), but any add’l info is appreciated, i can experiment !
thanks for feedback ! the results do tell me that it is feasible.
i don’t have apple (yet). All this project started out to be was to preserve santa !!
Well, the easiest thing to do is simply import .obj file into Bambu Studio on your PC. Then you can save it as an stl or 3mf file. Well, I don’t know where you see more work in converting an obj to an stl?
The slicer can open both. Modern slicers can open quite a few file formats.
thanks ! I did not realize you could import an OBJ file into bambu !
i will go back to polycam and get the OBJ file, and test it.
then i’ll get the other program and try it, that you recommended.
quetion, do you know how many photo’s it can handle?
thanks !
re; projects - i got a new sewing mchine. I’m trying embroidery, to see if i cn do letters on our maintenance group sweatshirts (about 40 yello fluorescent sweatshirts, nobody knows whose is whose !! add that to the stencil cutter, the 3d printer, the woodworking shop, the computers, and who knows what else !! anybody who says they ran out of things to do, i can provide a list !!
again, thanks, have a great day !
wow, very nice ! I exported the OBJ file (comes as ZIP file, with multople other files, textures, etc) - imported it, and it looks the same as the STL file !
i will research the 3d zephyr, see ow many photo’s it can handle, and see if i can refine my photo’s for improvement (or take more of them)
thanks !
