Second layer not printing/extruding

  • Detailed description of the problem

I’m printing custom architectural models, and on some plates when printing in PLA white, the first layer prints great, but after the LIDAR scan the printer goes through the motions of printing but does not extrude any plastic (see video below if it works). Disabling LIDAR does not work.

This only happens on some plates, only with white color PLA (same brand as other colors, although I predominately use white), effect is random - sometimes wall is printed and only infill is not, other times the whole layer is missing, sometimes 1 layer is not printed, other times 3 layers are missing. After the 5th layer printer continues to print normally.

Only seems to happen only when I have multiple color filaments in Bambu Studio, Changing filament order in AMS makes no difference.
Only changing the filament order (in Plate settings-Change first layer order) fixes the problem. Happens with both 0.4 and 0.6 nozzle.

  • Printer model used
    X1C AMS
  • Slicer settings used
    Custimized BBL setings
  • Type of filament used
    Basic White PLA
  • Photos that clearly show the problem

As seen, wall is printed ok, 2nd layer isn’t extruding.

While I have a working solution, it’s driving me nuts, especially as many times I forget to change the filament order and so have many failed prints. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Do the models that you are printing cover the entire plate? If you print one of the example models that were delivered in the printer memory, do they complete?

The attached model’s size is about 250x220mm (barely fits on the plate). Yes, most models print normally, Models from makersworld also print normally. even most of my custom models print normally. And even this model will print normally if I change the first layer print sequence. Which is weird, as it’s a single color model.

Is it possible the that head is activating the filament cutter?

It’s an interesting thought - however, I don’t think it does.
The model does not cover the exclusion area for the cutter, there is about 32 mm of space left over at the bottom (south) of the plate. Also, it would already happen on the first layer?
I’m thinking it has something to do with the multiple filament settings and AMS, I may have messed up something, although I cannot figure out what, and it’s nagging at me greatly.

After doing a ton of googling, I see that people have similar issues, and have two possible solutions in mind;
1: Heat Creep (although that in my mind is unlikely to happen on the 2nd+ layer), but have lowered the PLA printing temps and increased the fan speeds;
2: SD Card - this seem more likely, so I formatted and than removed the card altogether;
Makersworld models still print OK, will see what happens with a big print and update…

Update - after numerous flawless prints, with different temps just to make sure, I am now 99% certain the problem was in the SD card. So I guess from now on my first step of all troubleshooting will be - remove SD card :thinking:
