Shading on a print after slicing?

Hi All,
Hoping someone may be able to help me or point me in the right direction. I am wanting to print this (see attached) for someone, however after slicing, it seems that the top layers have some kind of shading on it? Possibly for effect? No sure really, however I dont know what it is or how to ‘smooth it out’. Ideally, I would like to each section all solid colours. Has anyone seen anything like this? Note: I have reached out to the designer of the print, however, I am yet to hear back.

Thanks everyone!!

That is a weird one. It has the typical look of a top surface where different regions have different heights.

Is the part flat and of truly uniform thickness?

Can you measure the part thickness, subtract the 1st layer height and divide the result by the layer height? If the result is very close to an integer and a half, change the layer height so that you get an even integer. Or, better for print quality, scale the part in z so that the result of the above calculation is an integer.

:four_leaf_clover: & :crossed_fingers:

PS: Of course, it could also be a Studio bug. Closing and restarting has resolved some strange bugs for me in the past (usually associated to missing layers in prior versions though).

Two things come to mind:

  1. Model has a flat surface.

What pattern have you set for the top surface?

  2. Model has an uneven surface.

@EnoTheThracian just beat me to this one.

In case it is #1:

  • Press the rest orange icon to the left of the field to make it use the default.
  • Slice
  • Does it look different?

In case it is #2:

  • Slice the model
  • Use the layer bar (right side of window) to go down a single layer.
  • Does half the model go down to the next layer?

So, you haven’t printed it? When I zoom in on the picture it is clear that there is a layer difference between the brighter to darker regions. It looks to have been purposely done.

The bars appear to be printed in two different directions. Zoom in on the photo.

I did print it and it does turn out exactly as the picture shows. I didnt notice it during slicing and until it printed. I then examined the sliced image and sure enough, thats when I saw it

I appreciate everyone’s input. I am at work at the moment, however I will try to do some troublehshooting later when I am home, and report back. Thank you everyone!

Hi All,
Once again, thank you for all the replies. The designer ended up getting back to me last yesterday evening and mentioned that he had ‘flattened’ the design. When I downloaded his newly posted .3mf file, the ‘shading’ had been removed and the colours were now solid. Not exactly sure what it entailed to get it like that, but it’s now how I prefer it. Thanks again everyone. Much appreciated!

Looking close it looks like the white and yellow has a single wall which is typical for the topmost layer I think. The red looks like a double wall so I wonder if it does have multiple heights and the red is a bit taller?

Hard to say for sure but there do seem to be different wall counts though you can manually set that piece by piece so maybe not?

You can also set the top layer pattern so maybe it’s just set to something unconventional?

And assuming the screengrab is with the slider on the right set to the topmost layer?

And see now it’s solved!
