Shadow when printing tool cutout bins

Fairly new at this, so please be kind. I have a gridfinity bin with tool cutouts. I created the bin in Fusion 360 and used the Fusion function to export to Bambu Studio. In Bambu Studio I used the paint function with edge detection to paint the tool cutouts yellow, but the black base shows through the first few layers. Using Bambu filament PLA Basic 10101 black with 10400 yellow. Thanks in advance for any help.

Without seeing your model, from the photo, it shows that your layers are thin where the yellow makes contact with the black. As with any filament, thin layers are generally translucent and not 100% opaque. Try increasing the bottom layer of the yellow filament and run a test print at varying thicknesses to find which thickness is optimal for opacity.

Thanks Olias, sorry for the newbie question but I’m not sure how to increase an individual layer. I had tried slicing the layer but that results in a yellow band around the perimeter which I want to avoid.

No worries, we were all new at one time.

The best way to do this is to go back in CAD and thicken the surface you are looking to increase. However, within the slicer, you might get away with increasing the layer height using the variable layer height tool. You’ll have to experiment to find out what is the optimum solution for the filament your using.

I’ll use and example where I have a bowl shaped object on a 2mm high square. I’ll cut the assembly in half to make the visual easier to see.

There’s a couple of different techniques but the most straight forward is to set your layer height to something less than the maximum. This will give you room to vary the layer height. So if you’re using a 0.4mm nozzle, set the layer height to 0.20mm or so. Then select the object that you want to vary.

Select the object then select the variable layer height tool.

Move your mouse over to the right hand side, left-click and stroke over the area you want to make thicker lines layers. Right Click will make it thinner. This will require a bit of patience and practice.

If all goes well and your shell for the yellow filament is not too thin, the increased layer height where the shell meets the black may just be thick enough to be more opaque, no guarantees but test it on a smaller section of model.

I think another solution might be to manually paint the “shadowed” areas with the sphere tool. It increases the depth of the color only where needed.
