Should an enclosed printer be used for PETG?

On the filament wiki page, the chart shows that it is recommended to use an enclosed printer for PETG. But further down it says this:

When printing filament with a glass transition temperature within 60 ℃ - 80 ℃ or so (such as PETG) and heatbed temperature is set above 60 ℃, it is recommended to remove the upper glass cover to avoid the filaments get soft and creep, which leads to abnormal filament delivery or clogging.

So should I print PETG completely enclosed or remove the upper glass cover? I may be misunderstanding something, but the wiki page seems to be contradicting itself.

wouldnt it be nice if we could set a chamber temp and the fan would ramp up and down automatically? Before purchase, I assumed thats what it would do. besides that and the super loose carbon filter housing, im not sure what the chamber fan is useful for.

I’ve been printing PETG with various unenclosed printers for years. So, an enclosed printer is definitely not a must-have feature for printing PETG.

I have printed PETG both ways and at least with Overture PETG I have had success either way. You could also open the front door and accomplish the same thing if you have an AMS. Prior to my X1C I had a Prusa MK3 and had no PETG issues with it being unenclosed.

That column in chart does seem a bit confusing …

I believe that column is showing “YES” it’s possible to print PETG in an enclosed printer AND Bambu Lab recommends using an enclosed printer for PETG. However, in the notes above that chart, they then recommend that it’s better to only have a partially enclosed printer (by removing the top).

Their recommendations aside, I think it’s common knowledge that PETG does not require an enclosed printer. And it might print best with an unenclosed printer. If using an enclosed Bambu Lab printer though, removing the top glass and opening the door will more or less make it an unenclosed printer.

Why does petg need the top opened? I have neen printing with it fully enclosed without any issues.

I literally thought it would do two things.

  1. Control the temp inside when printing lower temp filament with the door and top on.

  2. Exhaust fumes after certain high VOC filaments after a print is completed before you open the door.

I haven’t printed low temp filaments after I upgraded my P1P to a P1PS so I’m not sure that 1 is working but I know 2 was just a wishlist item because it def doesn’t do that. Lol I just manually do it after a print is completed for a minute or two sometimes. (Not that it probably does anything) LOL.

You may only need to do this to prevent heat creep if the print is an especially long one (in time).

I did this 3 color print in PETG. I think it ran 5 hours (0.12 layer height). Door closed, 260ºC extruder, bed at 60ºC. Printed face up (so the lettering was horizontal when being printed). You can’t see from this angle, but the color changes all happened around the 4th hour of the print. So it was running white a good long time before the first switch. The colors only took a few seconds for each layer. More time switching filament than printing it.

The issue is heat creep. If BBL would turn on temperature control of the chamber fan, you could address this risk without taking your X1C apart. “Turn on fan at this percentage when temperature is above this threshold” would be all it’d take.
