I’ve done a bit of digging around, both here on the forum and online, and I can’t find a satisfactory answer. I recently bought an H2S/AMS 2 combo, and as soon as AMS 2’s were available again I got a second one (along with an external power supply). When I saw the message about reduced drying power to AMS 2 “A” while printing, I decided to buy an second external power supply for AMS “A”. This way I could have full power on both units so they could support “drying while printing”. Here’s the question: because of the fact that the AC power plugs, for the external power supplies, are so hard to reach I usually leave them plugged in all the time, is this going to cause problems down the road or will they be ok? My H2S is on a smart switch because the power switch is so hard to get to. I’m curious what other folks are doing about this.
I don’t have AMS external power supplies, but my AMS-HT is constantly plugged, as is my H2D. If you are not concerned about the power consumption when idle, I would not worry about the power units constantly being plugged.
If you are concerned, you can always use a different place to cut power upstream of the power supply itself.
I have my 3d printer, drybox, and Bento box all plugged into a smart power strip (plenty available on amazon, for example) that I have connected to my Apple Home. This lets me turn on/off individual components at will, without the need to reach into the back and physically plug/unplug. When my new AMS2 arrives, there’s already an open plug for it.
That surge protector is also mounted in a place that is easy to reach and has physical buttons for turning each individual outlet on or off as well if I dont want to/don’t have my phone handy.
It has been a great system for power management.
I should really look into getting one of those. I have a power strip (plugged into an UPS) with separate rocker switches, but each device has its own smart plug, and you run out of realestate pretty fast doing it that way (plus the power strip is very hard to get to). I was more concerned about whether it would be like having the AMS “on” all the time if I left the power adapter continuously plugged in. You’ve got the right idea with the “smart” power strip. I guess I know what I’ll be shopping for this evening.
