I want to put identifying text on the bottom surface of a model I am designing. I don’t want it recessed or in a different color. What I would like is for the text to have a surface that is different from the rest of the bottom layer so that it is visible but subtle.
I tried the Text tool but it is not flexible enough. Also, even on the bottom surface, it orients the text so that the viewer would have to look down from the top with x-ray vision to read it correctly.
not familiar with Studio as i mostly use Orca, but I THINK you could use a text object as a modifier, and choose a different surface aspect for the area delimited by the modifier.
the text orientation can be changed in the text tool, iirc there is a “mirror” check box, or you can reverse the text object before joining it to the object
A few options that have worked for me: I believe it will achieve what your asking but the statement of - “text to have different surface” might not fit though the light will reflect differently providing the desired effect.
Use Modifier Mesh ;
adjust the text, increase/decrease flow rate for text only and set speed slightly lower as well. or
Set the text layer height to be a slightly different for the text vs rest of 1st layer. Roughly .06mm - .08mm which is enough to look different when light catches it and close enough for good bonding.
Id run a few tests printing just the first 3-5 layers to see how it looks and adjust from there.
This doesn’t help but funny - I’m also kicking myself as I saw a video just the other day that would provide another option but cant find it. I meant to save it so I could try but now cant locate the dam thing. If I find it ill post it. If you think you might want to view it - save it
This basic idea could work in Studio, No need to mirror, just apply the text to the bottom surface or perhaps a .SVG logo as a modifier, changing the bottom surface pattern for the text object. (Bottom surface texture depends mostly on the build plate.)
Some experimentation will probably be needed, results can depend on several factors.
Try different Bottom surface patterns for the main model, orientation of the text, size of the text, etc..
Ideally, the individual lines of a bottom surface should not be distinguishable, so if your print were “perfect” this idea would not work. But if you want subtle in a real print, this might be a solution.
Studio should be able to do the same, as suggested by lkraus, with the limiting visibility from the build plate being the same
using a smooth plate could help ?
or if the object is big enough, you could try and create an object from the text, so you can choose a different filling pattern, which woud become more visible with a thin bottom shell (ie 1 layer)
You could use text that is embossed with a font that has very very thin line width, so that walls actually fuse together. Then you have a closed bottom surface but where your text is, the regular first layer pattern is interrupted by the walls around the text.
I like this one. However, I need a way to apply text that won’t be upside down and backward. Do I have to flip the model over, apply text, then flip it back?
When you enter the text tool, you can move the text around. It will always be flush on the surface under the cursor. So when you move it on the bottom side, it should be readable from below without modification. Just turn the view around so that you can see your part from below the build plate. Then move the text on the bottom surface.
It’s not in the popup but the text itself has a handle to move and rotate it. I didn’t have the need yet to mirror the text
But maybe I just don’t get your point.
