I am in the middle of designing a part that has many objects fitting inside it with close tolerances, in some cases 1/2mm or so. Since it has to fit inside an area that has a very abnormal shape I am printing several tests first and using PLA for it since I have a ton of it. When I go to print the final version in ASA should I expect to have to adjust the tolerances for any kind of expansion or shrinkage? Overall piece will be fairly large, almost the entire X1c build plate and about 175mm tall if that matters.
Thank you
I generally find I don’t have to make any adjustments when going from PLA prototypes to ABS/ASA when all the parts are the same material and don’t have to interface with external parts/mounts. When I have a mix of say PLA and ABS parts in an assembly or parts have to mount to a hole pattern I generally enlarge ABS/ASA parts .5-.7 percent.
Thanks for the info. I can likely run a partial test fit before a final print. It would just be rather disappointing on printing something with 12 bucks in filament and taking 18 hours only to have things not fit when completed. Thank you
